Help With CLR!!
 

Hi, i have an 86 k20, the top of the bedsides has surface rust. I have read threads on that clr stuff and im going to give it a try. Basically im not going to start restoring the truck for another year or so. I dont want the metal to pit, if i make a bucket full of water and pour some clr in it and then scrub the truck with a scotch brite pad, rinse and be done, can that harm the metal at all? just sitting like that after i rinse? You may want to try using some naval jelly to remove the rust, and when dry, spray it with some primer that moisture won't penetrate, to get you by until you start the restoration process.
Regular primer or bare metal is just going to start rusting again,

Don't let the naval jelly dry... You may want to cover it with newspaper for example and wet with a water spray.
Phosphoric acid will take rust off. I bet if you mix it with a little water and Tide (this may spark memories for some), you'll get poor man's naval jelly. Do not let it sit on concrete. It will dissolve concrete.
Phosphoric acid is in the paint section of the home store and is the base of many rust removal products, including (I think) naval jelly.

Either way, if you're trying to preserve the original finish in the area, I'd try to remove the surface rust with a scotchbrite, then apply the rust remover, scrub, repeat as long as it takes.

Never heard of using CLR for rust. I know it didn't work on my bath tub once. The method sounds similar to Randy's naval jelly method. Check it out.

Can this clr damage the metal at all?
