Re: Compressor Motor Sparking on Start

single phase motors have a start winding and switch, the switch is centrifical; closes when the motor stops and opens after a certain rpm
the start winding gets the motor turning in the correct direction and then opens the switch
the opening of the switch is what your seeing

and no, you wouldn't want to use it in an explosive atmosphere as you can also see a spark at your pressure switch

Re: Compressor Motor Sparking on Start

One thing to check is if your bleed off switch is working as well as your check valve. The bleed off should hiss at shut down and if the check valve works, the hiss will stop after a few minutes. If the hiss does not stop, then the check valve is bad and the compressor will start up under full load. This causes significantly more start current and strain on the compressor.

hiss stops shortly after the compressor stops
