Manual Gear Box Grease
 

So I replaced all the seals in my manual steering box and cleaned out all the old grease. Can I use regular grease like for suspension or wheel bearing grease? I did a search but only found grease as answer. Also how full do I fill it?

If the seals are good use gear lube, like 85-140 GL-5. Fill it to the top of the plug opening.

John Deere corn head grease works great also. Can order on line or at the dealers....let it sit in the sun a little and it'll go right in. Around $3-4 a tube.

You need to read the bottle to make sure it is safe for "yellow metals" when you are using it in transmissions. The yellow metals would be your brass synchronizers. Not all of the GL 5 Hypoid Gear Lubes are safe. I have found that only the more expensive lubes have this characteristic.

80 - 90 wt hypoid gear oil the old std gear oil) is all that you should use in there . grease "should" not be used in there.

napa sells sta-lube "gl-4" gear oil, I think thats what the service manual calls for, just to be safe. I saw somewhere that GL-5 attacks yellow parts. They also might make a synthetic oil that would work.
