DIY Blasting Cabinet. Anyone build one recently??
Having heard the prices to blast a stripped C10 cab...... £310.00 for bladting alone at mates rates, I have decided to build a cabinet myself (as long as I can find a pair of those thick looooong gynaecological gloves you use to hold stuff with)
A 20 gallon resevoir is around £120.00 delivered and I have a 100liter/150lbs per square inch Broom Wade compressor. Should work OK. I will Goigle it in a bit too, to see just how easy, or not, it is to build a cabinet. Just looking for tips before I figure it out by trial and error. Thanks. |

Do you want a blasting ROOM, or a simple cabinet? Small parts are easily handled with a big cardboard box like for a dishwasher. Cut an opening in the top toward the front and lay a piece of glass over it for a window, get gloves like you mentioned stapled over hand holes cut in the front, poke a hole high in the back for a shop vac hose, a hole in the side for an air line, and one on top somewhere for a light bulb, and that's it. Media bucket inside with a siphon pickup works great for getting the small/medium job done. Best thing is you can throw it away (the box) when your done so it's not hogging valuable space in the shop when you don't need it. I've done this several times for many projects over the years, but can't seem to find a picture. Trust me, it works well for cheap!

I made a "mini-garage" that serves 2 different purposes. I use it as my large blasting cabinet and I also use it as a cover for my engine. Allow me to explain. I wanted to protect my engine from the weather while I had the hood and fenders off. I have a minimal storage space, so keeping the engine on the frame seemed the safest and most logical. After I restored and painted the engine (all done outside) I set it back on the frame. So my "mini-garage" does 2 things. It keeps the engine clean and I also use it as a blasting cabinet so I can re-collect blasting media and use it a second time, thus saving a bit of money. It's a simple 4 sided box. The small wheels keep one end just an inch or two off the ground and the other end has short legs to do the same. This allows ventilation. It's wide enough to straddle both front tires. To use as a blast cabinet, I roll it into the yard and turn it over 90 degrees. Most of the blast media can be captured and collected with a broom. It can be moved by 1 person with one hand and I can roll it anywhere in my yard all by myself. The original flat top (pictured) collected rainwater, so I modified it by placing a 2X4 beneath the center to give it a gentle curve left to right so the water runs off (sorry - no picture of that, but you get the idea). Materials cost about $65. The last 2 pics show the engine under plastic with all the front body panels off. I am able to cover everything from the firewall forward with the "mini-garage". Necessity is the mother of invention, humble as it may be. |

I use an 8x8 foot picnic canopy with plastic sheeting around the sides and a tarp underneath to catch the blast media for re-use.

Now that Monile carage cabinet idea I do like a whole lot.
I have access to an intermittent supply of Chinese build packing crates from a Stainless steel company down the road who fit out commercial kitchens and bring in large machines. May even find a complete unit ready made. Thanks for the detailed description. |

PS.......
I picked up a great solution to the loooooong Gynaecological gloves problem on another forum. Take a regulap pair of long gauntlets (prefersbly rubber fingered) and sew them to the cut off legs of a pair of denim jeans and then staple to the handling holes of a cabinet. These forums really do rock with clever helpful people. |
