New engine! $400 6.0 LS...

2 Attachment(s)
Saw this on craigslist today and picked it up; iron block/aluminum head 6.0L LS out of a van with only 90,000 on the clock. Mine for all of $400. :D

Should be a fun little engine for not a lot of money! Going to be somewhat of a departure from the short winded and not overly powerful little 250 six in there now...

(Not sure when I'll throw it in yet; still need to come up with a harness for the EFI and a couple other things.)

More later... :chevy:

Damn, I thought I did well getting the 292 and sm465 for $500, you win :)
Nice score.

WOW! An LS for only $400. I need to keep my eyes pealed.

Yeah that is a good deal. Around here that engine would be at least $1400.

Re: New engine! $400 6.0 LS...

just think... your going to have nearly x10 invested in supporting the engine than the engine itself

(transmission, mounts, crossmember, harness, fuel pump, intake, o2 sensors, gauges etc)

But there so much fun!

That's a great deal there. Should be a fun build. All these cheap (in price) LS engines sure make it hard to sale an old school big block now a days. Can't wait to follow your install.

I thought you guys might like it. ;) $400 was certainly a deal on one of these!

BTW, this is going to be a super low $$$ project. I'm going to use all the stock EFI stuff and use part of a reprogrammed stock(junkyard) harness to control it. I need to come up with a little bit of (mostly junkyard) stuff, but it shouldn't cost much. I think it's going to be a really fun project!

Yeah Jim, these have pretty much killed the old hotrod SBC/BBC's for people who know anything about them. These things are really cool...

Things you'll have to decide on...

Drive by Wire? (then you need the matching pedal and TAC module for your ECM)

Is your current EFI fuel pump capable of supplying the 58psi for the LS?

Tank location (in cab may get noisey with the fuel pump)

transmission your going to use?
then driveshaft and new U-joints since its a 6.0 and you'll break the 1310's potentially.

Oh the fun

there so many more thing... but just stuff for you to chew on

Harness is easy, I picked up the complete harness and ECU for $60 from a local and stripped it down in a few hours with direction from LT1swap.com

$400 is a steal!

No drive by wire BS--cable throttle.

Fuel pump will very likely just be one taken from a late model truck/car that is suitable for the LS.

Not sure about tank location; already thought an underbed (or something) tank might be neat. Not a big deal if I go that route.

The OE SM420 HD truck four speed that's in there will stay for now. NV4500 or similar would be nice, but I need to find one first. SM420 should have no trouble at all with semi-sane driving, though; the NV4500 is pretty much just for the OD and potentially slicker shifting (If I was drag racing I'd put a TH400+loose converter in it--it's a DD/work truck.).

Following that; it's actually a one ton truck (C30), so it has an HD truck driveshaft with the HD carrier bearing and 1350 u-joints from GM; no problems there.

so are u going to putt it in your step side that you just put the 6 in?

That's the idea for now. It's the truck I'm currently driving/using (no sense repowering a truck that's sitting!), and the 6.0 should also make pulling trailers and merging onto busy highways really nice.

(The 250 that's in it now was actually supposed to be an engine to run until I put the new 292 in it, BTW.)

Not sure if I'll leave the 6.0 in this truck and use the rebuilt 292 in a half ton or what. I actually have a pretty good mountain of engines I'd like to put in something at some point! This probably won't be the last time I have an engine on a hook.

Good find man. You will be pulling that trailer around in no time with it.

:jdp: Same here on the above, or even worst. That would look really GREAT on my project! Dreaming don't cost a dime.
Good luck, and please post all your build details, so if budget permits, one can follow that mostly stock swap route.
EXITO!!!!

Re: New engine! $400 6.0 LS...

Yeah, I'm going to document the swap real well for others looking to do the same.

BTW, I got it unloaded the other day. (Sitting beside the 283 that came out of the truck that I still have sitting there.)

Soon... :chevy:
