Tune Up Question
 

Hey guys, Wanted to get some opinions on tune up products. I had the truck emission tested today and it failed pretty bad for Hydrocarbs. Standard is 900 and I logged a 1333. I am planning on starting out with a tune up, plugs, wires, distributor, rotor, clean the carb, oil change, air filter, pcv. Anything else that I missed and any recommendations on what to use or not use as far as manufacturers i.e. bosch, ac delco, fram.

350/V8/4 barrel rochester/hei ignition

Any help would be appreciated.

Do 67-72 trucks have to pass an emissions test
in Illinois? Is this recent? Or has it always
been that way?

In CA we don't have to smoge it. Just need insurance. But my needed the cat replaced inorder to pass the test.

Not sure if this is new or not. I know I received the test notice in the mail to have it tested. I believe they are a little less stringent on the older vehicles.

I have no catalytics on them. Did they have cats back in 1969? Running dual exhaust into glass packs put on by previous owner.

They didn't start putting cats on them until the mid 70's. Maybe the person that was testing didn't know any better. But there is no requirement in NC.

Onless your engine is getting worn, the tune up should help.
Taking a spray bottle of water and spraying a small steady stream into the carb with it running at about 1200 - 1500 RPM can help to knock some carbon deposits off of the combustion chaimbers, pouring small amounts of tranny fluid into the carb the same way can do it too, but personally i feel better with the water.
Make sure your timing is dead on, and replace your PVC valve too (I think 69s had them)
If the inspector says something about cats, then you need to find his boss and let him know that the guy needs trained properly. There are very few emmisions things installed on a 69 car, and even less on a 69 p/u.

In Illinois, if you're in an emissions area, you DO have to pass emissions for this truck. Although they haven't opened my hood, you should have just a PCV.

Also, for that year, you'll just have to pass an idle test, nothing more.

At 1300 PPM, I'm guessing you can actually smell the truck running rich. This should be pretty easy to fix.

High Hydrocarbons means you're running rich. If you've rebuilt or replaced the carb, definitely get out a vacuum guage and set the idle mixture screws. Also, the things you've suggested all work. I've been told that changing the oil also helps.

If nothing else helps, check for a vacuum leak. These can lead to really poor mixture.
