project low buck dump truck with a diesel twist
I picked up a 73 one ton dump truck a couple months ago. I have almost 8 acres and need to haul rock and fire wood. So far I have hauled about 23 ton of rock and many other things. Well on the last load the clutch died on me. So instead of just doing a clutch it is getting an engine swap, cab swap and a paint job. I know I will get flamed but the new power plant is going to be a c 350 olds diesel with a turbo. Keeping the 4 speed manual with a new clutch. If the 350 dies later I have a 455 out of 71 toronado that I will put in. I'm on a tight budget so I'm using stuff I have laying around.

The diesel 350 goodwrench engine I have to put in. This is another truck I picked up. I was going to use the frame and flat bed off it but the frame was worse then the one on the dump truck. So I am just using the bed off it.

Cool. Not into diesels but I am into low buck. What's with the gas can and battery? Did you run the engine sitting on the ground?

Re: project low buck dump truck with a diesel twist
Ya it had been sitting in my shed for about 5 years so I wanted to make sure it wasn't stuck or anything. It ran good.

Here is the frame without the cab. I'm going to fix some rust and I might box the rear to help with the heavy loads.

I got the engine pulled apart last night. I'm putting new head gaskets and arp studs in it to be safe. It looks really good inside. It still has the cross hatches in the cylinders. Also installing a new timing chain while it's apart.

What kind of turbo are you going to be using on the 350 diesel?

Re: project low buck dump truck with a diesel twist
I have a Garrett t3 t4 hybrid I was going to try first. If it is too small I have a John deer tractor turbo to I can use

I got some more parts today. Rust free doors that are basically brand new and have never been installed. Hopefully tomorrow should be a productive day.

Re: project low buck dump truck with a diesel twist
I checked your thread out and I dig the green truck. If you get up around my way and want shoot the **** let me know. I got the doors on today. I have a 83 Hurst I need to get painted for a customer so I'm talking a few days off from the dump truck.

Re: project low buck dump truck with a diesel twist
Right on man. I'll hopefully get up to Cedar Falls racetrack here before the end of the season, but that will probably be as close as I get. I've got to get gears for Green Jeans before I do though. Dang highway gears...
