Repaint or leave original...Thoughts?

Struggling here.. Starting my build and going to pull the cab on Thursday to have the frame blasted. As the bed is off and there's no motor or tranny in it at the moment seems kind of foolish not to do the frame. I have no intention of restoring the body as I love the original condition of it so it's going to remain an "old worn" truck on the outside as well as the firewall etc.
My problem is what to do with the rest of the engine compartment? There's little to no paint left on the radiator support and left inner fender. I can rub out the surface rust and keep it clean or I can repaint only the black parts?? I'm also undecided on whether I'll repaint the motor a more appropriate green/blue or leave the current color with the wear (it's a 292 and not original to the truck)... Any way I know it's a "luxury problem" but I'd appreciate some thoughts.

BTW, did a test spot on the hood just to see how well the body is going to clean up.. pretty happy with the results

I myself would do my best to preserve an original paintjob.
I would try repair the bad areas and do my best to match the existing.

Awesome thread, just starting on my truck and I'll keep the original patina but I'm going to have to see about some faux matching on the bed sides as they are a little too patina'd.. Anyone in CA that does work of the quality of Jerome??

As far as the engine compartment, I'd leave anything red alone.
As far as the black of the inner fenders and radiator support, I think you'd be cool either way. I do5nt think a nice slick painted engine compartment would detract from the coolness of the overall patina truck.
But then again, if you did nothing in there, It still isn't going to rust to nothing in your lifetime.

its whatever ur choice is really, looks sweet either way... resale patina is hot, new paint is pretty to look at but cleaning and waxing is a welcome chore, but a chore notheless. just send pics!!!

Personally I'd repaint all the black stuff just so it doesn't get rustier in the future.

for what it's worth, my truck is primed, spray painted, patina, scratched, scuffed and anything else the PO did before I got it. I'm going to leave the outside beat up, but when you pop the hood... it will be cherry! Get into the cab.... pristine. I like the idea of the "sleeper".

I would repaint it. There are plenty of single stage paints that are cheap and would still keep the old look.

Repaint around motor if you want. I would leave the outside patina paint just like it is. Maybe clear it or spot in real bad spots. I would much rather have a old worn paint than a cheap paint job. I have walked away from many trucks that had shade tree paint jobs over bondo and rust.

what i did with my truck when i put the new motor in. i repainted all the black --inner fenders, radiator support everything under hood.plus new shiney stuff on the motor. inside the truck the interior was very nice but the outside was old truck.

Here's what I did. I too liked the original firewall so I polished and waxed the paint. Then I prepped and re-painted the black with semi-gloss Rustoleum. I also love the look of a clean motor in stock trim so I hit it with Chevy orange to give it a nice "pop". I also hit the underside of the hood in semi-gloss. I like it, and people do give it a second look when I lift the hood at a cruise in. You have a darn clean looking firewall there too. I say make that motor compartment a looker!

Thanks, took a look at your "got my truck back" story pretty cool stuff there. I was really regretting having sold my '65 20 years ago (my profile photo) until I found this one...

Single stage, as in Rustoleum or the like??

Wouldn't dream of messing with the exterior paint except the bed sides. Thanks

Kind of what I'm leaning towards. Thanks

Thank you, wouldn't have a few more engine compartment photos would you??

Here you go Scuderia, I live in a dust bowl but I do my best to keep it clean. The exhaust manifolds are painted with Rustoleum cold galvanizing compound. It does not burn off...never, ever.

Re: Repaint or leave original...Thoughts?

I think it would make a fine fauxtina truck if you left it as is...maybe do some work on the bed sides...far as the 292...in the 70's they were painted chevy orange. But if you want the original 60's look then green and black is the color. :chevy:

Re: Repaint or leave original...Thoughts?

You could try cleaning it iwth CLR and then shooting a satin clear over it to protect it.
