hidden vin on a 78 swb

Need Help!!! I need to find a 2nd vin # for my 78 GMC SWB. I have the one on the driver door jam, need to find another. The glove box has been replaced at some point so its not there. and of course there is none on the dash, that started in 79. it doesn't have the original motor so its not matching. It should be somewhere on the frame somewhere. I was told by on the driver side by the steering gear box, but not seeing there. Anyone with a 78 could you tell me where I can find it?

At some point they started stamping it into the top rail of the frame above the cab on the passenger side. I have the cab off of an '84 right now and it's definitely there. You can probably see it with a light and a small mirror.

I have a 77 k3500 it has the vin plate on the door jam and one on the drivers door there is a sticker and it has the vin on a sticker in the glovebox when I took off the bed to paint the frame I could see the vin stamped on top of the right side frame but it was just the last 6 numbers of the vin. and I have not seen the vin anywhere else so I think that is the only places to find the vin.

I just went and took a look, and it's actually in two places. One is just above where the fuel tank selector valve goes, and the other is right behind the front bed bolt on the same side.

hey mike does it show the full vin ? I remember when I had my bed off it just had the last 6 stamped in the top side of the frame on the right side behind the first bed bolt hole.

There is some variation between assembly plants (and model years) as to location and whether it was the full VIN or just the sequential portion.

Still have the original transmission? It should be on the trans as well.

On my 84 K30 frame it is the 3rd-5th characters CGF (after the "1G") and the last 6 numbers (sequence).

Right , my 84 is the same. I had that to check but the vin # for the 78 are not the same and not located in the same locations. I believe onward from 81they had to be 17 characters.

Intresting fact that I found, was that gm trucks made in CA(code Z) had the vin stamped on the passenger side of the th350/400's.

Fremont had a lot of little things they did differently.

They were a long ways away from the watchful eye of Chevrolet Central Office.
