1966 Longbed convert to shortbed?
I have a black 1966 longbed stepside that my neighbor and I are about to paint. He asked me if I wanted to convert it to a shortbed. I'm open for opinions. Thanks in advance for helping me decide.

Do it!

Re: 1966 Longbed convert to shortbed?
Well ... I like them both.
However, I personally think the Long bed is proportioned better, and looks really nice with a lowered stance. The job itself is not too hard to do ... but it does involve some work. You have to shorten the frame and bed a total of 20" ... 12" in front and 8" off the back. The frame was be CORRECTLY cut, squared up, and properly welded. The same obviously goes for the bed. I've thought about splitting the difference and building a 7' bed ... Good Luck ! |
Re: 1966 Longbed convert to shortbed?
First question in my mind would be:
Do you trust your neighbor's welding and fabrication skills with your life? |
Re: 1966 Longbed convert to shortbed?
I would only shorten the long bed One foot in front.....make it a 7 foot bed. They look a lot better then a short or a long bed. The proportions are Very nice

Paint it and drive the hell out of it!

Re: 1966 Longbed convert to shortbed?
Ditto, paint it and run it. if you shorten it it will be torn down for another 6 mos. Hope your neighbor is an expert body man and fabricator or it will be a mess.
Long beds are nicer anyhow...:metal: |

Yeah, drive it and enjoy it.
Keep your eye out for a short bed truck - if that's what you want. |
Re: 1966 Longbed convert to shortbed?
I have one of each and like them both, the short bed is nice for running around and the long bed is nice for using it as a truck.
