Head light switch

I have a 1974 gmc truck i was replacing the headight switch with a new one from LMC trucks, pressed the button on the back got the old knob out. Installed the new one, put the dash cover back on, cant get the knob to go back in the switch. Any tricks or is just a piece of crap switch.

Push the button, push the knob shaft in and release the button.

They do that sometimes, did you slide it in and out a few times, not pulling it completely out of the switch?
Dirt and dust build up and keep the latch from grabbing.

I've used a small crochet hook to reach inside to pull the locking tab back up before. You can do the same thing with a large paper clip and a pair of needle nose pliers.
1. Straighten out paper clip by hand leaving the last bend at 90 degree's to use as a handle.
2. Using the pliers, bend a SHORT "J" hok at the end of the paper clip opposite the handle.
3. Reach down inside the switch to hook the lock and pull it back up to the "ON" position.
note that you may need to depress the button while doing so.

good luck and have fun!!!

I ended up pulling the switch back out and taking it apart. Looks like the push button isnt hitting the sheetmetal that holds the plunger in, i plan on putting it back in the truck this afternoon and make sure it works.

I've had problems with the headlight switch out of my 74 as well. I bought a new one to replace it. If it gives me problems then I plan on using a headlight switch out of a 59 Chevy truck. They're simpler and more reliable and they have tabs on them for the wiring so they should be very easy to adapt. They also attach to the dashboard the same way and should look perfectly stock without cutting or drilling anything and have the same functionality, except maybe a dimmer if the 74s had that as an option.
