Steering Column Mount to Dash??

I need help AGAIN! I've started trying to re-install my steering column. No problem with the firewall mount but I've gone totally brain-dead on the dash. I have the two metal brackets that bolt up to the bottom of the dash, one underneath and the one where the instrument panel is - but even after tightening these the column is sitting loosely at least 1/4" to 1/2" below the rounded fitting in the dash. Of course, I didn't take pics when I pulled it out :dohh: so I can't remember if there was another piece that helped sandwich the column securely between those brackets and the dash. Any help - pics or otherwise - would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
David

Re: Steering Column Mount to Dash??

Do you have the black rubber donut piece that goes around the column and fills the gap between the column and where it touches the cutout in the bottom of the gauge cluster bezel?

Here are some pics of what I have. I took everything apart about 5 years ago and THOUGHT that I had bagged/tagged everything. Apparently, my organizational skills are on par with my powers of recollection. Apologies for the pics being oriented wrong.

There is a U shaped bracket that is above the large square bracket that has the rubber stop pad for your brake pedal. That is the bracket that holds it tight, is that bracket there?

Re: Steering Column Mount to Dash??

You have to take the brake stop plate back off and the black trim piece. Look under the dash above the square brake plate. A u shaped bracket goes around the column and bolts into the under side of the dash.:chevy:

Thank you all! It's the bracket on the left of Lockdoc's pic that I've misplaced - but since I never throw anything away I know it has to be around. And now that I know what it looks like, the search will be much easier.

I really appreciate the help.

Thanks for the help everyone. I FINALLY located a spare bracket on the pedal assembly from a donor cab :metal:. Haven't found the original bracket yet. When I do this again, I'm going to take a picture every time I breathe and have a separate, labelled box for every assembly.

Glad you got it together. I used to take all kinds of pictures but I have had so many of them apart over the years that I don't need to do that any more....

Where does the black piece go? I bought my truck with the column hardware missing and I've acquired the plate and u strap but have not seen the black plate till now. If someone could post a pic of it all together that would be awesome!

I don't have a pic but after all the other pieces are bolted on this goes under the dash and the "U" shaped part fits up around the rubber collar at the instrument panel....

Ok. Thanks for that. Putting together what someone else took Part with all pieces missing can be challenging. If any one has a pic that would be great.

This site is amazing! The exact thing happened to me and I found this thread with a search for 'steering column mount'. Great information even though it was 2 years ago.

I feel your pain! Try putting together a complete "Basket Case" I literally, had to put every single piece of this truck back together, and what was missing or damaged (not very much) I searched for good used parts where I could find them, or settled for some small repro parts.
I'm hoping to fire it up tomorrow for the first time! I still have to install the bulk of the exterior
trim, and the door windows/door panels, but, I have my priorities!
Have a good one!

I ask the same question about 2 months ago. My truck was completely disassembled when I bought it. PO just threw everything in boxes, nothing labeled or marked in any way. This gang sure helped me start to get mine back together.

Sorry for reviving old thread......Are these brackets year specific or are they same across the board for 67-72. Also, are they the same for auto vs 3 speed on column? I have a 68 3 speed on column and I have located some brackets off of a 71 auto. Will they work?

No they are not all the same. The '67 and '68 brackets are different because the emergency brake handle bolts to the bracket in those two years. The '69-'72 are all the same and the only difference as far as the transmissions would be that the automatic pedal stop bracket would have one rubber pedal stop pad and the manual would have two. You can't see the rectangular holes for the rubber pads in the picture.
