What can I put on this area after I sand off this surface rust to keep it from coming back till I'm done with the build? I have some 600 grit to remove it and the little over spray, but I want it to stay gone till i'm done.

I've used everything from WD40 to aerosol chain-lube, but cosmoline is made for this application. Cosmoline is also hard to clean off , it is a waxy finish.

I would use LPS-3. It's designed pretty much for this kind of application and is not too bad to remove when the time comes... you might find it at ACE hardware, but certainly available online.

Transmission fluid. It will stick long enough to keep rust at bay and is easy to clean off.

If you're going to use sandpaper, you'll get tiny grains of garnet in the engine, make sure you wash hell out of it before assembly.

If all you're talking about is the tiny rust spots on the pic, wipe it with WD-40 and be done with it, you're overthinking this.

Just about any type of spray lube will work. Hit all bare metal spots including the bores. Or rub it down with oil or trans fluid, those just aren't as easy as the sprays.
