8K aftermarket tachometer cluster F/S
5 Attachment(s)
I am happy to be in Oregon and getting the new shop set up. In between putting inventory away and sorting through parts, I was able to get a cluster built ;)
Here we have an aftermarket 8K tachometer cluster for sale. It was built from a kit and has new aftermarket 8K tachometer, tins and circuit board as well as a new harness. The speedometer is a good used GM that has been reset to zero miles, checked for calibration and needle bounce. It works perfect with no noise. The fuel, temp, amp and oil pressure(60 lb) gauges are all very nice used GM gauges that have been test for function and work well. I also installed new #168 bulbs. There is a slight blemish on the bezel (see photos) I can replace the bezel if needed for an additional charge. I will ask $350.00 for this cluster or $400.00 if I replace the bezel. I can also install LED lighting for illumination for an additional $25.00 Thank you for looking, Tom |

Re: 8K aftermarket tachometer cluster F/S
Why would a speedo needle bounce? Mine does. Maybe time to upgrade.

Re: 8K aftermarket tachometer cluster F/S
Tom, I have a GM tach from a late 70's camaro that reads normal @ idle but doesn't read correctly above 1500 rpm. I have an msd (gm style) distributor. Any idea how to correct this? Thanks.

from my experience there are a couple of things that cause needle bounce on a speedometer. #1 is the cable. Needle bounce from a cable usually happens at a lower speed. Usually below 30 MPH and will get better as speed increases. #2 is a weak magnet in the speedometer itself. When the magnet gets weak, it will not have the ability to hold the cup in the correct position. This will usuall happen at speeds above 40 MPH. It gets a little complicated. The fix is to have the speedometer head rebuilt or replace it with a good one. The only problem is when you buy a used speedometer, you have no idea unless you have a way to check it first, if it will be OK. How is the fuel gauge issue going? Hope this helps, Take care, Tom |

What style MSD dist are you using? HEI or external coil? and are you using a 6A type box? If you are using a 6A box, they have a tach output that you use instead of the negative side of the ign ciol. If I understand correctly, these Camaro tachs work and are wired just like the early truck tachs. There is a 12V, coil and ground at the back of the tach. What I am not sure about is if they are adjustable for fine tuning calibration like the early truck tachs are. When you say it is off, how far is it off and what are you using as a reference? Hope this helps Take care, Tom |

I did get a hot spot on my NEW speedo cable from the exhaust. Bet it is the cable messing with my speedo. |
Re: 8K aftermarket tachometer cluster F/S
Tom, mine is a 7k tach & I can easily flash it past that, bmy distributor is an msd version of the GM internal heihttp://i1109.photobucket.com/albums/...002_152756.jpg

Re: 8K aftermarket tachometer cluster F/S
Would you consider selling without the good speedo? This is exactly what I need but I'll have to do the electronic speedo swap...no reason to trash a good speedo...

I would try a filter such as the one in this link. http://www.marshallinstruments.com/products/9219.cfm If I understand correctly, GM used a filter from the factory on all 1975 and up tachometers. Worth a try to see if it helps. If that does not work, I would bet your tach is just out of calibration which could be caused from a defective resistor in the tach circuit board. These tachs are cheaper to replace than they are to have repaired. Keep me posted, Tom |

Re: 8K aftermarket tachometer cluster F/S
T-Bone, how much extra to put the woodgrain face on it to match my 71 Cheyenne Super? Do I need any kind of filter for the aftermarket tack?
Thanks, Randy |

I do not believe that the aftermarket tachs need a filter but I would recommend one for any tach installation. The filter will just provide a cleaner signal and makes the tach more crisp and responsive. As far as the wood grain bezel, I can provide a aftermarket bezel with an overlay or a wood grain bezel with the overlay pre installed over a chrome bezel. The options for these are limited. I am working on making my own wood grain overlay that fits the aftermarket bezels that is a better quality than what you can buy but I just have had no time to work on it. Hope this helps, Tom |
Re: 8K aftermarket tachometer cluster F/S
Tom - I'll take it for $325. Also PM'd you about the woodgrain bezel. If it's too hard I can take care of that but since you're the expert I'd rather have you take care of it.
PM me paypal info and the additional cost for the woodgrain bezel if you want to do it. B/R, Randy |
