1958 apache,orginal build. transmission color

Does anyone remember or know what the original color is for an old 1958 Chevy Apache 3 speed transmission? I have a numbers matching V-8 eng & transmission, trying to keep everything original. Upon cleaning the the casing I found some evidence of black,however just not sure. Any advise or info would be most appreciated. :chevy:
