Need Accessory wire for stereo...
 

Recenlty installed stereo in my buddies 70' truck. Stereo works fine. I used the pink wire from the ignition switch, which is hot when the engine is on, and used it for the accessory wire, but it does not work when the key is turn to 'acc'.

the other problem is when the dash lights are turned on, the fuel guage moves from full to empty and the turn signal positions are reversed. Im thinking this might have to do with a bad ground.


anyway, can I keep the pink wire as the accessory? Or is there another wire I can use? Thanks.

I used the original radio wire to hook mine up, but you can splice into your cigarette lighter wire also. It's on when the switch is in accessory position.

The original radio harness is nowhere to be found and he doesn't have a cigarette lighter.....

Sorry man, if you have a tester check your fuse box for a connection and run the wire all the way to the radio from the fuse box.

There is one in the fuse box...can't remember which one though.
You are 100% correct on the dash lights and fuel guage...ground the inst panel and it'll work properly.

Run the "memory" wire to the cig terminal on the fuse box..I'm assuming from what you said the guy with the 70 don't smoke :) so you can use the cig terminal...this one is straight wired no fuse (fuse on stereo), and this maintains the memory. On Sony the yellow wire is the "memory" wire, and the red is the "power" wire. the red wire should go straight to the radio terminal on the fuse box. the acc on the ignition switch runs off a different wire, not off of the pink ignition wire, that is why it doesn't turn on your stereo.
run the "power" to the original radio terminal, use female spade connectors. It should work fine. No need to splice up the ignition wire:)

GROUNDING INST PANEL, I don't remember if I did this with the inst panel off or I sqeezed between the seat and under the steering wheel...but....take a good length wire with a small eyelet spade on both ends...You know the ones that are circles for screws. Undo one of the screws that holds the back of the panel to the plastic face, preferably a lower one, scuff up the metal and the eyelet with some sand paper. Attach one end of the eyelet wire to that screw, then there should be a few predrilled holes on the bottom of the dash below the inst panel, at least my truck had some or drill a small hole and then use a sheet metal screw and attach the other eyelet to the dash. bingo bango grounded inst panel.

There is a terminal just under the plug in for the fuel gauge.This is hot all the time and can be used to hook up the wire on the radio that need a continuous hot feed to retain the preset radio stations.

There is a radio terminal you can use for the ign. on hot power wire.

Found the faulty ground, everything works fine.

I will change the accessory wire right away. The only cool part about having it switched to the pink ignition wire is unlike most cars, when you have the key in the on position, and then start the engine, the radio doesn't kick out. No big deal though, I will change it.

I will have to take some pics of his truck. He's dad had it sitting on the farm for 30 years and took 3 years to finish the project of restoring it. Looks awesome .
