Fan shroud question!

Ok I think I got this figured out but I know you guys can help me out. I swapped in a vortec 5.7 in my 71 and am getting everything ready to fire it for the first time in the truck. Dropped my radiator in (4row) and my small block factory fan shroud is not going to work. The fan is just a little big and I think if it had of fit will be past the fan. So if I'm reading everything correctly is the big block shroud thinner and possibly have a bigger opening for the fan? Hope that makes sense lol thanks for any advice in advance.

What's the size of the one you have?

Re: Fan shroud question!

Fan looks to be 19in and that's right at the shroud opening size. Biggest issue is the thickness of the shroud.

Re: Fan shroud question!

There's lots of fans available in the 16-18 inch range, check out Derale. The AC fan shroud is a little over 1 inch deeper than a non-AC shroud.

Ok thank you I'll see about changing the fan.

Thought it was the other way around. Non AC deeper?

I agree. Factory small block non-A/C shroud is 3/4" to 7/8" deeper than the A/C shroud. Here's a pic of them back to back. The A/C shroud is on the right.

What water pump are you running? Short, long or from the Vortec engine? Serpentine or V belts? Is the fan from the Vortec engine? If from the Vortec and serpentine, is the fan the right rotation?

It's the complete power plant motor and trans from donor vehicle. It has the factory serp setup and fan and pump.

I tried searching the forum for "serpentine fan shroud" and got some results that may help. Give it a try and see what you think. Just check to be sure the thread applies to 67-72 trucks.
