In the market right now, sadly, GMCs being rarer does not make them more valuable, it should but it doesn't. From a collectability standpoint I don't think the Chevys and GMC are differentiated at all, even though the GMCs are superior in every way .

I hear ya, and congrats on the find.

...and let's face it, I don't think there is another vehicle with a name so friendly. If vehicles were people, I can't think of another that could offer it's hand and say this sentence and expect a shake in return: "Hey, my name is [insert vehicle model here]". Well, not without thinking to yourself, "What a tool" or "What a poof" or "What are you a fricken robot?"

There were only 3357 Chevy 2wd Blazer's built in 1972. So you can figure that GMC produced maybe 10% of what Chevy production was. So less than 400 or so. Not many for sure. I have a 71 GMC Jimmy 2wd. Chevy only built 1277 2wd Blazer's in 1971. So I'm guessing that Maybe 200 or less our out there.

In Canada you can send your vin number to GM and they will send you information about your vehicle such as the options, where and when it was sold and production numbers. I sent away for the info on my 72 Jimmy 2wd and the documentation they provided indicated that my Jimmy was one of 112 sold in Canada in 1972.

That kinda gives you something to go by in regards to production numbers for the U.S. However if you do some calculations in regards to population of Canada vs US and the fact that Blazers and Jimmys of this era are by far more plentiful in the U.S. Vs Canada I think you would end up with a number of roughly 1000

Re: how rare is a 72 gmc jimmy factory 2wd

The number that has been thrown around since I have been on this site in 2000 was gmc's overall where one third of Chevy production. Not sure where that info came from. This is the first I have heard of the 10% production estimate.

The other story as to why gmc numbers don't exist was they were supposedly list in a fire at some point in time.

Re: how rare is a 72 gmc jimmy factory 2wd

Just looking at some numbers. The population in the US in 1972 was 209 Million. Canada population was 21 million. About a tenth.

Production according to GM Canada was 112. 112 x 10 times the population is 1120.

1120 x 3 is 3360.

Whoever came up with the 1/3 ratio is pretty accurate in this instance seeing as how the Blazer production number is 3357

You make an interesting point...but I think these two guys acquit themselves pretty well in the congeniality department...but Jimmy is by far the friendliest domestic. ;)
