Power back tailgate glass problem

I have a question that I'm needing help with. I've got a 1984 gmc suburban that has a sliding back glass. The guy I got it from rolled the back glass down then pulled motor and trans and sold it. But before he sold it he cut all the wires that go to the plug that plugs into the side of the steering column and a few other wires. The back window switch is gone and I'm not sure what plug in plugged into the switch. We've tried everything to get it rolled up and we've had no luck. We even tried to go to the wire in the tailgate that went to the motor and put the hot wire to a battery and ground the ground wire to make it go up like that but still nothing. If anybody can help me with this or has any suggestions let me know. It'll all be appreciated. Thanks

There should be a safety switch on the side of the tailgate that keeps the motor from engaging while the door is open. make sure that is working or bypassed.

You just want the window up?
Is big cable coming off window motor still there? I assume it is as you're trying jump the motor.
Pull the cable off the motor and put a cordless drill on the exposed cable end and wind the window up. Put cable back on motor til your ready to wire it up properly.
If cable is NOT there you need one. Window will not go up with out it.

Take a look at this thread.

Shows rear wires to lock switch which controls the motor.
Blazer/Suburban are same.

Re: Power back tailgate glass problem

I had forgotten it could be done manually. The cable looks like a speedometer cable and the housing screws directly on to the motor and the regulator.

the motor is grounded to the transmission and thus thru the tailgate. you only have to put power to one side of the motor to get it to go up.if the wires are not there then you don't have to worry about the safety switch. what cable are you talking about. I have a 78 and there is no cable in there.

Now I feel a little dumb. I got Blazer and Sub tailgates mixed up.
Blazer uses a drive cable with remote mounted motor and Subs use direct drive for the regulator like in the doors.

Here's a good thread on ck5 about Suburban tailgate repair.
