Starter Opinions Needed
 

I have a GM high torque mini starter installed on my 83 C20 454 to help with heat soak hard start condition. I still have some starter drag when the engine is hot but the engine will turn over. I bought a Thermal Zero wrap for the starter/solenoid but discovered that the solenoid is in direct contact with the exhaust manifold heat shield. I can't see any way to "clock" the starter or solenoid so as to get the solenoid away from the manifold. It also seems to be very close to, if not touching, the engine block. Does anyone have ideas on how to get this away from the manifold and block? I would think that turning it about 180 degrees would get the solenoid away from the manifold and block. Is there a "super mini" high torque starter?

I would try HITACHI PSL100 Enforcer starter. It is probably the smallest Mini out there. Just beware of Chicom copies...

Best mini starter is the cvr performance pro torque and it can be clocked many different ways. Only problem is it cost around $340 but is what I use. I have the lower torque rating one and haven't had any problems with it.

I have the actual GM part number starter (I think) and from what I read online it can be clocked, so I guess I will take it back to the shop that installed it years ago and see if they can do something with it. I have a remote solenoid so I think I just have direct contact heat from the manifold radiating to the starter motor through the solenoid housing.

Remote solenoid is the way to go if you run headers. I had to put one in my truck since when the truck would warm up the heat from the headers would cause the starter to start spinning. Only way to shut it down was disconnect battery or run it out of gas.
