variable ratio power steering

I remember seeing a post about using a later model OEM truck gear box that had variable ratio steering 17-13 to 1. I was wondering if anyone knows how to identify this gear box and what year of trucks where equiped with them. Also any other information pertaining to the swap would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.....Stroker

I have read several articles on steering gear boxes, but a model 605 (I think) is what they referred to. Whether or not I am right is debatable, but this is what I remember. Whether or not it is from a truck is unknown to me, but I believe it is from a Camaro, or Firebird (late model).

Anyone else ????

I think there is also a speed sensor at the bottom of the steering column that somehow makes it work.

steering box

I think board member Breeh has one on his 68 4x4. Maybe he will see this and fill us in if I'm correct.

Thanks for all the info keep it comming. I have been considering a AGR Performance gear box that has the variable ratio and firmer valving but thought I'de explore some other options before shelling out that kind of $$$.

The slower ratio provides stability and control at highway speeds yet, as you make a sharper turn the ratio quickens to provide more responsive cornering. From the info I've found it seems most varies from around17 at center to 13. I'm not sure how fast or exactly when the increase comes in.

Hooter It looks like it was an option from what you've found on your truck. The option number might be another way to chase down some more info. Thanks again............Stroker

Stroker, I researched the subject as well and ended up going with the AGR box. It's a really nice piece.

I called up the Summit tech line and the guy couldn't answer all of my questions so he gave me the AGR tech line number. I called and talked to one of their guys - at length. He was really nice and knowledgeable.

He ended up recommending their variable ratio box (13-17:1). They also have a straight 12:1 box (both for power steering), but he said that it would be a little "twitchy" on the street.

I just told him that I wanted to get the part number for my application ('67 Chevy SWB pickup). He gave it to me and I promptly ordered it from Summit when I could get their discount (last month). I haven't installed it yet, but I can't wait till I get it put on.

I'm probably going to put one of the Type II pumps and a cooler on it, since I have aspirations to take the truck to the Silver State Challenge in the future.
:burnout:

Thanks for the additional info Truckstr. I had wondered about the straight high ratio and thought it might be a bit too much for any high speed or highway driving. I had wondered about the type II pump I've heard it was a little lighter and more compact. Is it the pump that's used on the factory truck serpentine systems?

I'de sure be interested in knowing how you like the AGR box once you get it going. I'm kinda leaning toward using their gear box over a factory unit. To me the steering effort with the original power steering is a little to light, and there isn't much road feel. I'm hoping the AGR unit has more feedback and feel more positive with the tighter valving.....Stroker
