trip meter possible exchange?

Is it possible to use a 89-91 suburban cluster with the trip odometer in an 84 swb c10 with limited wiring (know how) or just swap the speedometer to the one with the trip meter. As always thanks in advance.

The trip meter in the Suburbans and crew cabs, is just a mechanical meter in the speedo housing. You can just swap the speedo over to your cluster, and make note of the mileage. I've seen many that do not work, because of the design, so check it out first.

Your 84 should be a cable driven speedo and the ones that are from 89-91 are an electric speedo that need an electronic signal from the transmission. They may not work.

So what's my best bet for a cable driven speedo with a trip meter for my '73 C20? It sure would be nice, especially if I can't get my gas gauge to work.

You'll only be able to use the 89' speedo. The 90 and 91 are electric driven and the cluster is different too. You'll probably also need to grab a new clear lense from the 89' to allow for the trip dial to come out for access.

Just be sure you get a good speedo that works. A lot of the trip speedo's get jammed up and don't work very well. If you are hitting a junkyard, bring a cordless drill to attach to the speedo cable to make sure everything works properly.

What about 1988's? They have a trip odometer too.

I wouldn't see any problem with the 88 either. A few subtle differences like trip odometer and the high beam being one hole instead of two holes. Otherwise, I would think they would be compatible as long at they are driven by speedo cable.

electric speedo didn't start until mid-90. my 88 had the trip meter factory. just need the speedo itself, and the plastic cover with the reset hole in it. I have two extras as Mine was hard to reset, and found two different ones before I got a nice working one. I don't let anyone else reset it as they are kinda fragile.
