Starter Help Diagnose

I have a 1993 GMC C w/262 V6

It was suffering from very intermittent issues with what sounds and feels like a sluggish starter.

No rhyme or reason for it and it does not happen all the time.

Had it replaced and it seemed to be better but now (after new remanufactured engine went in) it is happening again.

Plenty of good solid start-right-up times followed by what sounds like a starter that is sticking or a starter being turned over with a nearly dead battery.

Any ideas on what would cause this sort of behavior?

Thanks

A tight (new) engine coupled with a less than new battery at low temperatures can do it.

Put a voltmeter across the battery terminals while someone cranks the engine over. Anything lower than 11 volts isn't going to cut it.

You could always try another known good battery for a test.

Also be leery of connections that have not been removed and cleaned for some time. Like ground straps to the frame. Etc.... I found the best charging on mine when I added a separate ground to the engine from the battery and separate power connection from the battery to the alternator directly.

I'd start with the battery as well. Parts store will load test them, but it needs to be fully charged. Throw it on a charger, let it set overnight, then take it (out of vehicle) to have tested.

Any idea how old the battery is? Is the case swollen/bulging? If it's much more than about 5 years old, I'd replace it since you're living on borrowed time anyway. After that, as mentioned, be sure you have clean connections on both ends.

Make sure the ground strap from the engine to the body is clean on both ends.
