Radio/Stereo Options?
 

Now that I finally have my project truck on the road, I'm finding that my commute is incredibly boring without a radio. I have an original uncut dash, and would like to keep it that way. What have you guys been doing for shaft mount radios in our squares? I don't currently have a radio at all. Preferably, I would like something cheap, with the ability to plug in my iPhone. Right now I'm thinking that my best option may be to continue to try and find an original am/fm stereo cassette, and just hack it to ad an aux input. My doors have already been cut for about a 6" speaker, so I just plan to install some inexpensive speakers in the doors and run a cheap head unit so that would-be thieves wont give my truck a second look. Sound quality isn't too important at this point, as I am getting older and finding myself listening to the news and talk radio more than music.

Anyone have ideas, or willing to share examples of what you have done?

I/ve looked at the USA and RetroSound radios. I would love to have one, but just don't want to spend that kind of money right now.

A head unit mounted in the glovebox is always an option, just look for one with a remote so volume control etc. is easy.

I have a lighter plug holder/charger for my I phone it plays the music and phone threw the stock radio.

Motornut - are you using an fm transmitter, or is it wired into your stock radio?

If not that route I'm a fan of the inline FM transmitters.

You can get those old Delcos off ebay pretty cheap too. I paid 30 bucks for mine.

I've used the scosche Aux imputs with very good success in my Jeeps. Need to get one for the truck.

I'm going to ad a TINY switch and put the aux plug and switch onto the ashtray so you can't see them when the ashtray is closed.

I've got these on two of my Jeep CJ's and my old daily driver Accord and they work fine.

I just installed a RetroSound Zuma radio in my truck after my Jensen cassette finally bit the dust, I highly recommend this RetroSound model sounds great, easy to install and operate, little on the high side on price but well worth it. Linky

I found this one on eBay a couple years ago, wired up with an Aux input. Works great! Sellers name is barlosal. Doesn't look like he has any 2 knobs in stock but may in the future.

I'm in the same boat as you--long commute (Tualatin to Montavilla) with a stock AM receiver. What's worse is that the Portland area AM-offerings are really lousy. Outside of a bunch of pundits yakking about politics, there's a few sports channels and a bunch of Salsa/Cumbia stations. AM 1450 is occasionally good--it's the Portland Public School Channel--but it also can really, really suck, depending on who's in the booth and how much they enjoy atrocious new rap-acts and emo-bands.

I'm going to by-pass the need for a head-unit by putting an amp under my seat, a few nicer speakers somewhere unobtrusive (probably under the dash in the stock speaker location?) and then run my iPod into the amp via an RCA-to-1/8th inch headphone jack. The pod will live in my ash-tray, where I can access it easily.

Until then, I'm rocking ear-buds!

I am considering the headless setup as one of my options as well. Just fill the holes in the lower doors with a couple of decent speakers, put an amp behind the dash, and plug my phone directly into the amp. Then I could just use a block of plate for the stereo opening.

Have you had any issues with using earbuds? I was going to try it the other day, but I have always thought that they were illegal. Although i have seen a lot of people wearing them while driving - presumably for the hands free feature.

I haven't had a single problem with them, though I do think they are illegal. If I see a cop, I pull up the hood on my sweatshirt. However, I was wearing mine the other day while sitting in traffic on I-5, when "Don't Fear The Reaper" by Blue Öyster Cult came on... Being a bit slap-happy from a 16 hour shift, I proceeded to shamelessly crank up the tunes and engage in a little automotive-interpretive dance, while accompanying BÖC at the top of my lungs.

And what do I see next to me but one of Portland's Finest, on traffic patrol, shaking his head at me and laughing. So I'm guessing that ear-buds aren't at the top of the enforcement agenda. Or perhaps the officer shares my taste in 'seventies glam-rock?

I know in California you're allowed to have one ear covered (by headphones, earbud, etc) but not both. Don't know about other states, don't know how much it's enforced.
