Numbers matching question

I'm trying to figure out if my truck is "numbers matching". This is what I have so far.

VIN. CE2OD-PB54431
C= 2wd Conv. Cab
E= V-8 Gas
2= 3/4 Ton
OD= Wideside
- = -
P= Pontiac
B= 1968
54431= Serial number (starts at 10001)

Eng. VO3I2YV
V= Flint (Engine)
03= March
I2= 12th day? (I assume the I is supposed to be a 1)
YV=???What is the "YV" code???

I know that normally there is an VIN code stamped on the surface next to the Engine ID as well. However, it is not there. Could it be stamped in another location?

Also, is there a way to tell if I have the original transmission?

Re: Numbers matching question

Numbers matching is an overused phrase that has different meanings to different people. With these trucks you can match the chassis to the cab, and the glovebox to either. You're trying to match the engine to the chassis, right? I believe there were no vin's on these engine blocks. I'll do a little more research to confirm that.

Re: Numbers matching question

VIN stamping on the block is a car thing, didn't happen on our trucks so your lucky there.
Someone smarter than me should be right with you.

Re: Numbers matching question

'YV' translates to 1968 327 manual trans, 220 HP 4 barrel. You lucked out there too!

Re: Numbers matching question

Need a Protect-O-Plate to know much more. Date codes on the trans. and rear will predate the engine. The engine assembly code and suffix you have found establish a vehicle assembly date generally following soon after.

Re: Numbers matching question

I have discovered that the serial number isn't always stamped on the pad by the head. My numbers matching 454 to my '70 Caprice, the VIN is stamped vertically above the oil filter.

Re: Numbers matching question

Point is the 67-72 truck engines were not VIN stamped or referenced in any way from the factory. Only the engine assembly code.

You are correct that a lot of late 60's and early 70's CARS did have VIN codes stamped in the belllhousing area on rough as cast block surfaces. Fun when you see a coded Camaro block advertised without a VIN and there it is on the back of the engine.
