91 speedometer in 87 with 4L60E swap
Can anyone show me how to repin a 91 suburban speedometer to work on my 87 Chevrolet Silverado. I did a LS engine swap from a 2000 Z28 Camaro. I used the 4L60E transmission. I have a speedometer from a 91 s Suburban and don't want to burn it up. The truck runs good I just want to get the speedometer working.

The LS PCM will buffer the signal, so you can run a wire from the PCM to the cluster plug. You will need the whole cluster, not just the speedometer. You may need to move the wires around in the plug to make it all work, but that is easy. Pin the plug to match the cluster.

Thanks Jon boy I've got the whole cluster and I've even got the plug from the 91 suburban with about 2or3 inches of wire left on it I wished there was another thread to tell me where to move each wire

The colors really didn't change through the years. Use the cut plug as a guide of where to move your wires in the plug. The extra one will be for your speedometer.

I know on my '92 Chevy van it has a separate module to convert the signal and calibrate the speedometer. I had to modify it to correct my speedometer when I changed the rear end ratio. The suburban might use it but the next gen body style it's built in to the cluster.

Alex , Here's some info that might help you . There is a lsx section in the engine & drive train at the top of the page that would help you better than here . May want to move this post over there to get better help on this .

Re: 91 speedometer in 87 with 4L60E swap
I guess the best thing to do is to make my wiring harness match the suburban connecter. I used my factory water temperature sending unit and oil sending unit and they are working in the 87 instrument cluster, I guess they will work in the 91 burb cluster?

This is exactly correct . All I did on mine was take a meter and track down which wire went where and moved them to the correct location . Worked perfect . I cant remember exactly but I think I used my original 82 connecter and just moved the wires where they needed to go and just plugged it in to the 91 cluster and added the one for the speedo. No cutting and splicing. |
Re: 91 speedometer in 87 with 4L60E swap
Thanks for all the help. Where did you mount the ECM? I bought a PSI conversion wiring harness, I am happy with the simplicity of it and how neat the wires are wrapped but am having trouble with getting the ecm in the glove box

Re: 91 speedometer in 87 with 4L60E swap
I converted my 89' to a 91' and had to re-pin the connector. I did a write-up along with some labeling for each pin that might help you out. Take a look and let me know if you need anything else...
