Is $698 for rebuilt 14-bolt A Good Deal?
I have a 14 bolt from an 87' that is currently 4.11 gear ratio. I am unfamiliar with redoing gears or rebuilding rear ends.
I have a quote from a builder for Traxxas to rebuild the rear end with 3.73 gears and bearings for $698 out the door. Is this a fair price? |
Re: $698 for rebuilt 14-bolt
Probably about what that job would cost, but if I were you I'd just start looking for a 3.73 geared 14 bolt replacement. Is the only goal to change to 3.73? Why?
Honestly, the 9% reduction in gears makes no sense to spend money on performance wise unless you are trying to match a 3.73 front. Be much cheaper and easier to put a little taller tire on it! |

Mike, thanks so much for the input. I am not set on paying him for th work, but wanted to gain some insight from more versed forum members on his quote.

Close to what my builder wanted to do the opposite swap.. Been looking for a 4.10's as I have a swapped 14B with 3.73's.......(and front is factory 4.10) I have been searching on and off for a complete rear with a 4.10 as when available can be picked up for $150-250.
Luv to do a little trading if you were a wee bit closer......... |

It's a fair price if it's a good shop with good parts. Quality parts including ring and pinion gotta be around $350 then add labor. Sounds fair to me.
Is the vehicle running? What are you not liking... cruising rpm, dogging off the line? Or are you preempting based on something else. What size tires are you planning? I'd be picking tires and engine setup and then I'd be running the truck long before any decision on gears. I've have my personal bias on gearing and tires based on my own experiences. So, you need to run it see if you really do hate the gears. I bet you can put some oil and brakes in that hunk of steel and get it to run long enough to make a good choice on gears. In fact, I bet if you put oil and brakes in it and it runs fine you won't touch it again! |
