67 Suburban - Convert 2wd to 4wd

2 Attachment(s)
Hello All - I would like to convert this very stock 67 Suburban to 4 wheel drive. Can I do it? Do I need a specific 4wd frame or just all of the running gear?

Am I crazy for doing this or should I just enjoy this thing as is?

Here are a couple more photos. Is that air cleaner correct for a 292?

That is a clean Suburban for the Midwest.

I don't think you will hurt the value of it by converting it if it is done correctly. The best and easiest way would be to find a 4x4 Suburban frame and swap it over to yours. The only problem with that is that the frame VIN will not match the title. If you swap the individual parts over you keep the matching numbers on the frame and title. I am not sure if the individual 4x4 pickup drive train parts would swap over or not but you would have to swap some cross members over too. There are some differences in the pickup and Suburban 4x4 frames as far as the body mounts and length.

If you type "suburban 4x4 conversion" into the Google box at the top of this page, click the circle in front of "67-72chevytrucks.com" and click on the Google button you will find some threads on it. Just make sure the threads you are reading are for the 67-72's the hits will cover all years.

Re: 67 Suburban - Convert 2wd to 4wd

This truck came out of north Texas so it is pretty solid. It needs a little floor work under front seat feet and it will need rockers but overall not bad.

I may have access to a 68 1/2 ton 4wd frame and running gear off a rusty Suburban. Maybe I should keep my frame and transfer axles, crossmembers, etc. Are 2wd frames the same as 4wd frames?

It is my understanding that truck and Suburban frames are different so I don't want to have to deal with body mount adjustments and the like, better to keep it all Suburban stuff.

Thanks for your input.

Re: 67 Suburban - Convert 2wd to 4wd

Does the truck have a leaf spring rear or coils? The 2WD coil rear trucks have a completely different frame from the 4WD leaf spring frames. The coil style frame bulges out at the rear to allow for placement of the trailing arms and coils. The 4WD frame goes straight back like a ladder. The easiest thing to do would be to swap the body onto a 4WD Suburban frame.

It has coil springs so sounds like a frame swap will be required. It is probably easier to do it that way anyway, get the 4wd repaired, renovated, etc. then switch over.

Thanks.

Too bad you are not closer to me..I have a complete Suburban 4x4 rolling chassis, with a disc brake front axle.

I can do that tonite or tomorrow but I must ask what is the basis of your interest? Is there a 67 Suburban database? That would be cool!

Interested in your options. What options did the burb have when it left the factory. Some are highly optioned while some suburbans had few options. Your spid will tell us your factory color and if you have any strange or rare options. I enjoy reading spids for some reason !

As a matter of fact there is, at least a database of SPID's. It is on page 3 of this forum but just to make it easy here is a link to it.

Post up your Suburban SPID if you would like....

I took a couple photos but need to resize as they don't seem to want to upload.

This thing is pretty low option but it does have tinted glass. I'm also curious as to if it was originally two tone.

Thanks, no color code for the paint. Your burb looks to be in great shape. They are hard to find in that good of condition. You did good :)

Well I know what color it was originally as the firewall was not repainted. Is there any other way to tell if it was two tone?

Yeah this thing is in pretty good shape considering it led a life of work. I traded a suicide machine 90 Mustang GT for it and some other consideration. I couldn't be happier.
