454 smog pump delete
Going to be replacing the entire exhaust system soon and when I get new manifolds, I want to eliminate the smog pump/ air system.
The smog pump is on the passenger side under the alternator. Has anyone done this and could recommend a new altenator belt that eliminates the smog pump? Or should I go with this: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/nal-10129569 And does anyone have any experience with one? This is on an 87 R20 suburban. |
Re: 454 smog pump delete
Mock it up, run a string to get a length, off to the local auto parts store you go. I think I posted the belt number somewhere, but I can't remember.

Re: 454 smog pump delete
I have read about the string method, but when I do this I may not have another car to run to the store in.
Read once that the Dayco Poly Rib #5060530 was the belt I need, but wanted a second opinion. Worst case scenario I may just wait until I can borrow someone else's car though. |
Re: 454 smog pump delete
Now that the sun's up. I used an O'Reilly belt 6k523. This is the number on the belt.
I used them cause it's close. |
Re: 454 smog pump delete
Thank you so much! Will be heading to O'Reilly's soon.
Thanks for taking the time to look for me! This board rocks! |
Re: 454 smog pump delete
I was back and forth a couple times till I got the right belt. Hope it works for you.

Re: 454 smog pump delete
Donut thank you for posting the belt number as it saved my ass yesterday! I left the smog pump on the 87 BBC motor that I swapped into my 85 cc thinking I would delete it later but figured no harm just letting it pump air to no where. Well long story short the damn thing started seizing up on the road yesterday pulling the 5th wheel! Luckily one of the two auto parts stores in the bfe town we were in had one an 060523 gates hanging on the wall. I tried to push through and didn't put the belt on right away but it got so loud I finally stopped and put it on in the middle of no where. Luckily all I had to do was pull the pulley off the smog pump and get the new belt on and it cleared the pump. But I really do appreciate the forum and people like you who take the time to post good info like that!

Re: 454 smog pump delete
I am deleting the smog pump on my 454 tbi truck but what do I do with the 2 wire connector running to a valve hooked to my smog pump?

No worries, I actually had to think a minute on that myself, I've called it CEL for so long I almost got stumped with that question
