It's a good price if you need it. If not than I would pass

Re: 1986 305 Motor??
My 305 has 174k on it. If its an 86 c10 engine it should be carbed, not injected

Re: 1986 305 Motor??
TBI showed up late '85 I believe it was. Being a 305, most would discard it as scrap, no matter the miles. Others don't like or don't know how to do anything other than stock replacement, so who knows. For me, that 305 is scrap iron.

305 that motor is a glorified boat anchor they give you the power of a six with the mileage of an 8 id pass

Re: 1986 305 Motor??
I donīt think it has fuel injection, probably the electric quadrajet. Itīs not a bad engine, my truck had the same engine when I bought it.
I drove it for 2 years without any problems. |
Re: 1986 305 Motor??
I had one in my 84 I bought new, just replaced it last year with over 200k on it,it still an pretty good when it was replaced.

Re: 1986 305 Motor??
If you know it runs and doesn't need any major repairs, and you have a small budget, go for it. But $300 seems kinda steep.
I had the opportunity to pick up two 305s last year for free, both of which had been "running OK" when pulled from vehicles. In fact, a guy delivered one of them to my garage and threw in an engine cradle. That's what they're worth! I actually took that one apart thinking I might do a budget rebuild and use it in my 82 C10, but it was bored +.040" and needed another bore job. I advertised the crank (which was in good shape) and the heads for free on Craigslist and didn't get one call! I even offered to give the heads and crank to a rebuilder, but they didn't want them. So I ended up hauling it all to a scrap metal yard. I ended up buying a 97 350 with Vortec heads for $150. I'm really glad the 305 was bad! |
Re: 1986 305 Motor??
Depends on if you NEED an engine...
What your budget will allow... If you NEED a trans as well... If you KNOW the mileage is really 60K... What you eventually want to do with it... It's not uncommon for people to toss in several additional "parts" to salt the oats and make you feel like it's a great deal in order to get rid of several items at once and put some coin in their pocket. Not saying this is the case, but it does happen. Now if you said it was your Pastor wanting to sell it.... ;) 1. It's worth what you are willing to pay... 2. You don't always get what you THINK you paid for... |
Re: 1986 305 Motor??
Would I? No.
But if he told you it was a 350 vette motor....;) Edit, still NO. (in case someone mis-interpretted the smilee) |
Re: 1986 305 Motor??
Nope. I have a few 305's and haven't even bothered to give them away. I just plan on refreshing them since they run good, and putting them in fixer-upper cars. Because why not. The 305 thats in my truck now is getting pulled for an 8.1L; the 305 runs great and has a new RV cam, it actually scoots pretty well so why not reuse it in a little S10 or something.

Depends the trans and what shape they are in.The mileage on a motor that old will be hard to prove so take that with a grain of salt.

We did all this to my bud's '78 305 with near the same mileage and it runs OK with it's 260 High Energy cam and Rhoads lifters. |

Re: 1986 305 Motor??
That is one clean engine. If I needed it I would jump on it; especially if I had a 80's Camaro. Those 80's Camaros don't need a 350 anyway. That would make a nice daily driver engine in something.

If it sat for that long I'd be concerned about rust in the bores, etc.

Looks like it's only 2 years old! I'd love to have some of the accessories, like alternator and PS pump mounting brackets for my 250 six to 350 conversion.
