Need Speaker Advice - 1978 Big 10
 

I just installed a new Custom Auto Sound (USA-230) receiver in my 1978 Big Ten pick up.

My truck has that single speaker in the center of the dash that is not operational. The previous, and original, owner rigged up some dime-store speakers and stuffed them under the dash floating there. I yanked those out. So as of right now, I do not have a speaker.

Based on this, I'd like to hear a few options. I've read just about every thread on speakers here and think I know what I want to do but I have a few Qs...

1. For those of you that purchased the dual speaker from LMC, how does it work? Is that actually acting like two speakers with 4 wires attached to receiver?

2. The next option for me would be to add cab corner speakers using a bracket sold by a member here. However, I have this original cardboard storage thing behind the seat that I would have to remove.

3. I would like to buy 3in x 3in cube speakers and put them in the upper cab corners so that the music is coming from above my head. To me, this would be a pretty clean install but I have been unable to find what I am looking for. I am envisioning a cheaper version of those little Bose surround sound speakers. Anyone do this?

We want decent sound for not a ton of cash. No real audio files here. Also, I definitely do not want to do any cutting. This truck is all original and I would like to keep it as close to original as possible.

I saw a youtube video where a guy used 2 3.5" speakers in the middle of his dash. He fabbed up a bracket that fit in the hole. It was pretty slick and you couldn't tell it wasn't original.

One option you didn't mention was the 4x10 OEM brackets that fit in the corners behind the seats. You do have to drill 3 screw holes and also make sure your speakers don't have large magnets, but they work well. Pictured next to a behind the seat tray. Being OEM, they will probably work with the cardboard thing you now have.

I earlier this week grabbed a set of the factory brackets with speakers off ebay for 10 bucks. You can find a pair 4X10 speakers on there for a decent price.

I have bought the LMC under dash speaker, and it works great, but I also added the factory 4x10 brackets in the cab corners, you do not have to remove the cardboard piece behind the seat to install the factory 4x10 brackets. I used these speaker in the factory 4x10 brackets (linky), the four speakers with a RetroSound Zuma radio is the perfect setup in my opinion.

Neither truck I installed Jeff's brackets in had much left of the cardboard tray, but I have used them with very satisfactory results. I think you could put a pair of 3.5" speakers in the factory hole in the dash with a little ingenuity and be good to go.

Thanks... I think I'm going to go with the dash speaker first then look to add cab corners. Or maybe I will do the reverse... I don't know.

For some reason I was holding out hope that I could find some small, good sounding little cube speakers that I could power Velcro in the upper rear corners.

maybe look at some small ( computer or) surround speakers I used some loose in the back for a while.
(the ohms was right).
before that I glued some tweeters to black (drain) pvc,cut the back on an angle for staging....
