Need some muffler recommendations
 

I'm trying to decide which type of muffler to put on my panel truck. I'm going to be running 2.25 tubing (unless you all suggest I go bigger) from my tbi 350. I want a good sound but I don't want it to be too much like straight pipes. I was considering Jegs Bullet muffler or there Deep Tone chambered muffler. I can only go about 9" in width.

What would you all recommend?

forget the mufflers, if you are going small diameter pipe get a couple glasspacks/cherry bombs and mount them at the collectors. the roadkill show swears its the best sounding exhaust and I tend to agree.

I have a sound clip of my 65 donor with a 283, cast iron manifolds, small pipes and duals with glasspacks, skip ahead a little, at about a minute I walk around back of the truck.

I have the 40 series delta flow flowmasters on my 66 with an H pipe and the 2 1/4 pipe. Good bark when you are on it and no drone at cruise. Good option for a muffler with center in and offset out to get the pipes up and over the tailing arms. Had dynomax turbos on it for a short time with the same center in offset out and it ran like crap. Turbo muffler in this configuration just does not flow good.

I had a pair of flowmasters on my 97 with a stock big block , after a while being a daily driver it was just a bit on the droney loud side ... i went with a 2 in 1 out and liked it a lot better , they did not offer 2 in 2 out otherwise I would have gone with that .. a muffler that merges the 2 head pipes into the muffler will help get rid of the drone .. you just have to search their site to see if they have one to fit your application ...

I use the Flowmaster 50 with my small block,,,love then but they cost alot..
i think a great choice would be the Summit , street and strips.....$29.99 and sound Great

Flowmasters (especially 40s) are loud/raspy/drone. Go with a pair of Summit Turbos. Cheap, and sound great.

Magnaflows. They sound nice at idle, but come alive when you rip on it. No drone at freeway speeds like a Flowmaster. Stainless outer shell, reasonably priced, come in 12" and 18" lengths.

My opinion: Flowmasters are the most over-rated muffler on the market. Dyno tests have proven it, time and time again.

X2...most everyone I know is running Flowmasters too. I went with Magnaflows and an H-pipe and love em. Not too loud for cruising but open up when you really hit the throttle, no drone.

Interestingly, I have the same dilemma.

And have to approach it with caution as I like to spend sensibly.

When I bought the truck, it was described as having Flowmasters fitted, exiting in front of the rear wheels. I like that a whole lot.

The seller also described it as a 327, but the V5 license document states 350ci
Unfortunately, the engine numbers were machined away, presumably when the engine was rebuilt at some time in the past.


ANYWAY......... Back to business.

I plan to fit a pair of 3" cutout pipes and and cutout valves to the truck, after which it will hopefully get a 2.5" dual exit setup, unless I can get the pipe sections made up in 3" flavour.

So my question is this, (and I ideally want real life experience and advice, as I know there are quite a few UK based guys on here)

In the UK Powerflow has been suggested.

My friend Paul Y will be helping me too, but I like as much as possible info.

What silencers will perform as will as Flowmasters, Magnaflows and various USA sourced equipment??? But at possibly more sensible pricing.

I am planning to go Mild Steel from behind the cutouts, which are Stainless Steel.

From a preference point of view, I do not want to alert Mr Plod from 200 yards, and do not want to get out the truck after a 100 mile motorway trip with the teardrop trailer behind me and end up with a throbbing headache. However, a nice sound is a nice sound.

I will have the cutout valves to add the Anti Social Thuggery side of the trucks persona.

How loud do you want in the cab?

I have Walker Turbo mufflers on my 64. Sounds very good outside, but won't drone you to death inside. Especially on your panel. You have a big echo chamber.

I love the sounds of my Flowmaster 40's on my 94 350TBI, but the are a bit loud and if the 94 was a bigger cab (crew/extended) it would be more irritating for long drives than nice.

My 02, has MagnaFlows and they, like the Walkers, are a very good compromise. Nice mellow sound inside, very tough outside...but the walkers are way cheaper.

Well after some pricing and a quick dwindling bank account I decided to be cheap and go with some glass packs for now. I got the main part of the exhaust down tonight and I actually really like the sound. If it drones too much when I drive it I will switch them out with one of the above mentioned mufflers.

I dont think you will have drone unless you put the glasspacks all the way at the back. make sure you run the pipes out the side or back too, not under that echo chamber.

as a side note, that video I posted was for the for sale thread when I sold the 283 out of that bent frame, it was up for sale maybe 2 hours and the guy insisted on taking that exhaust :haha: glasspacks man, thats the snip snap.

If you really want to quiet your cabin undercoat it, then dynamat then dynamat foam and a thick layer of jute plus your carpet and it should be dead quiet. The more insulated the cab is the less noise you will hear inside.

Little tip:

The closer to the engine the mufflers are, the louder it will be. Likewise, the further back in the system you put the mufflers, the more quiet it will be.

Here's how they ended up. About 2 feet from the rear end. Since I body dropped it about 4" the pipes are going to have to kick out to the side either before or after the axle.
