Safer? You mean easier to get off your skin? I can't say I've tried it.

looking at painting the roof of a generator shed in san diego, didn't want to go the respirator route

Nope, just as nasty. Anything you spray you need to wear a respirator for. Not only for chemical exposure but also for particulate. You don't want that shtuff in your lungs.

I've both sprayed and brushed rust bullet, using a ~new~and~fresh~ charcoal mask outdoors. It has QUITE an aroma to it.

Application Guidelines doesn't mention the need for a mask, but GHS SDS says it ~does~ contain a diisocyanate, and looks reasonably toxic.

It sticks like a bugger to rusty metal, but flakes off in sheets from clean metal.

Check out Master Series coatings. It's made for applications like yours, but can also be used for automotive purposes.
