Want to hook my 4 speed to my 5.3

Has anybody successfully mated a NP A833 or my6 4 speed overdrive to a 2000 5.3? I like the trans and want to keep it in my truck. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I cant afford a 400.00 McLeod flywheel

Re: Want to hook my 4 speed to my 5.3

Went and pulled my new motor today. Turns out its a 4.8 not a 5.3 which is cool by me. Still having a hard time finding anyone who has successfully mated my type of trans to one of these engines. Anybody got any info?

Re: Want to hook my 4 speed to my 5.3

I just found this earlier today on here.
Thanks for finding this info!!

I second this set up. I did the exact same thing with my 5.3 set up.

- 2006 6.0 or 4.8 flywheel (they are the same), pn NFW1050 from Orielly's brand new $60.00 http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/se...006&vi=1432413
-The other cool thing about this flywheel is it is drilled with the old school pattern that uses 3/8" shouldered bolts. Now you can use an old school chevy generic 12" clutch for $100.

I think in my whole clutch set up would have about $200 with all new parts

Re: Want to hook my 4 speed to my 5.3

Those are very, very uncommon in the chevy trucks. Special order trans from a handful of heavier vehicles, there was different version for 2wd and 4wd (and apparently an even more uncommon aluminum case). Which version are you starting with?

Is it actually the chevy option, or did someone adapt one of the Chrysler 833's to the chevy?

If its the original chevy 2wd trans, and it was behind a standard chevy-pattern engine, then mounting it to the LS shouldn't be too much more difficult than most other old trans. The top bolt hole won't lineup to the LS pattern, but thats fine.

Again, if its actually the chevy version, you should be able to use the 6.0 truck flywheel and the sbc clutch packs. From what I can tell, the expensive stuff starts to come in if your using the dodge-pattern bellhousing (making it the np833).

I've never put one in, so I can only go off of parts compatibility.

Don't forget the 0.400 stack difference in the smaller LS

The 6.0 flywheel should take up that difference, no?

Re: Want to hook my 4 speed to my 5.3

I do not think the fly wheel will change the relationship of the crankshaft, only the bell housing or the input shaft on the trans.

I am still gathering parts for a LS- Muncie swap in my 62 Corvette and this question has come up several times

Not sure about the NP A833

Re: Want to hook my 4 speed to my 5.3

The trans I have is the aluminum case 4 speed overdrive from a 86 c10. I pulled my 3 speed Saginaw and bolted it rite in. So this trans should be the same as any older 3 of 4 speed tranny. Thanks for the info guys.

Solidaxel you have done this and it worked?

solidaxel 02-01-2015 10:05 AM

Re: Want to hook my 4 speed to my 5.3

I only bolted a Muncie and old bell housing to the LS I have here on the floor, and yes everything '"looked" good!
I did not measure the depth of the input shaft into the pilot bearing on the crankshaft.
I have been looking at many article "HotRod" did a article with many questions this swap and the major item I read was the stack difference of -/1/2", but there were solutions for this.
Let us all know how it works for you

Re: Want to hook my 4 speed to my 5.3

Ive read those same articles but havent seen anything about them using a factory flywheel. Ive read on these forums about guys trying it but have yet to see anyone with any great detail. I was told when I put mine in that I wouldn't be able to use my stock 70 c10 clutch linkage but I did it anyway. My bellhousing has the flange on the side for a slave cylinder

I was under the impression the 6.0 plate had the spacer as a part of it (once they switched away from the long-crank 99's), and thats what guys were using to put the th350's etc behind the 6.0.

Re: Want to hook my 4 speed to my 5.3

Yes the NFW1050 flywheel is the required .400" thicker to make up the difference in crank length. Reason being is GM kept using the same NV4500 and NV3500 setups they were using in the previous generation of trucks.

Re: Want to hook my 4 speed to my 5.3

2nd, the NFW1050, is the proper flywheel to run....as mentioned, it is .400 thicker as compared to the LS-1 flywheel. It takes metric bolts tho (go ARP, on the flywheel & press plate bolts), they are just as cheap on the dollar, as the factory TTY pcs.;) you can use the genI pressure plate, but will need to drill, or ream 3 holes 1/64 over (.015-.016), but you will see it. The 3 larger holes , will pilot(center)the pressure plate, on the 10 mm bolts, vs the 2 pins that the gen 3 setup uses. Make sure to use lock tite thread locker on all the bolts...the crankshaft is drilled through, & will seap oil , if not sealed? An Ls2-6 pilot bearing should get you back on the trans pilot as needed....it all worked for me anyhow. Longhorn

Great. Sounding better all the while. I plan on documenting all this as I do it. Now I just need to start workin on my budget. That seems to be the hardest part.lol

Re: Want to hook my 4 speed to my 5.3

I'm gonna throw it out there...but those aren't known to be the strongest tranny's on the planet. IIRC the dodge guys saying they eat bearings if you spend much time with high rpm shifts. It doesn't sound like your planning a big hp build, but its something so be aware of if you do start building power.

I think itll hold up to what im gona be doing. Ive had it in my truck for lil over a year and I love it.

Any information on the LS-2 Pilot bearing, does this take care of the 1/2" difference in stack?

It drives into the converter pilot (large hole ) on the crankshaft, so yes it does set deeper to the trans , by .400-.500. Longhorn

Re: Want to hook my 4 speed to my 5.3

GM pn 12557583, should fit the spot....mine was 12 or 13 bucks, @ my local dealer. Mclould, offers a pc in bronze bronze...(basically a gen I bushing, from the looks), pressed into a custom steel shell. I have 1 , but did not use it . it was back ordered @ the time I did my assy? I will say that it was around 40 bones tho...just call GM ;) Longhorn

Thanks for all of this info guys. Sounds like this will work pretty good. Now ive got to start figuring out how im gonna do my harness. I pulled all of the under hood harness and pcm and under hood fuse box.

Been looking at that. Just dont know if I want to go that route, send it out and have it reworked, or just buy the one from painless for 675.00

Re: Want to hook my 4 speed to my 5.3

There are a few companies doing harness' for 50-100 less than painless (new). Its usually 375-450 to have one worked for you.

It was worth it for me to start clean and new.

Im starting to think that myself after seeing all that CRAP I pulled out.
