Does anyone have a 24x36 garage?
 

I'm thinking about building one that size and would like to see some interior pics to get an idea of how much space I will have.

It will be 24x36 with 12' ceiling height and two 9x8 doors on the 24' side.

I have two. One 26x42 and the other 30x40 and they're both too small :lol:

Nice! 24x36 is the biggest I can squeeze on my half acre lot. :-(

Mine is 25x32 with the doors in the 25' side, I can put my F150 and my wife's Malibu in the garage and my C10 shortwide in the back crossways. My F150 is an RCSB so if you have a extended or crew cab you will need the extra 4 ft.

If I was to do it all over again I would turn it 90 degrees and put 3 doors in the 32' side.

Look on garagejournal.com, go into forum then into garage gallery and be prepared to spend a lot of time looking, you do have to register (free) to see a lot of the pics but its worth it.

I have a 40x80 and still don't have enough room. The more room you have the more stuff you have!

My barn is 30W X 50L.
I've got 2' wide shelves on one wall, a 16'foot lund, my old truck, the wife's old car.
You need to turn sideways to get inbetween. Your 36 would be good.
Boat and trailer takes a bit more than 20'. Your 24 would be good as well.

Build it as big as you can afford. You'll be surprised how fast it fills.

I would make the doors at least 10' wide and 10'6" high. mine are 11'6" wide, plenty of room to back into, and spend the extra monies on insulated ones.:chevy:

We've got a 22x30 now as one third was used for a bathroom & staircase upstairs. Was a 30x30 originally. Never enough room but big enough to do work in. Only thing I'd say is get an 18' wide garage door instead of 2-9' doors. Much easier moving things around with a fullsize door.

Go as high as possible also if you can go higher than 12' & get full height doors incase you have big truck projects lol

I agree...go doors on the 30+ side. My last shop was 24x30. I had 3 doors on the 30 side-If building the same shop again, I would do a double door and a single versus the three doors so a car hauler would fit in. With 8' doors, I couldn't fit my trailer in. If I had done the doors on the 24 side I would have lost usable space. With 12' walls you can always pick up a 4 post lift to add to storage. I had 5 cars in my shop (2 4-post lifts and a bay with just one vehicle). There was still room in the front for my snap-on boxes and a warehouse rack.

I can tell you that no matter how big you build it, you will fill it! I'm in a 40x50 now and already looking for ways to rearrange things to suit my needs better.

I just built a 36 X 40 on a 1/2 acre lot, my wife didn't figure out it was bigger than the house until about 6 months later. These are before and after. I am still figuring out where to put everything on the inside, I will take some pictures when I get home.

When I built my shop it was all 2x6 walls. If I was to build again I would build the wall with the garage doors with 2x4. Because the garage doors end up inside you wall. So if you outside diameter is 24' using 2x6 walls you are down to 22' 10.5" inside. Your garage door will most likely be 1.5 thick. Hope thats understandable...

That is the exact size of my main garage. I was also limited by the City on the size. (I cheated and added a 6 foot by 24 foot cold tool and compressor room off the back of the garage a year later) I have scissors trusses for a cathedral ceiling so I could put a hoist in the center in the back half. Once the hoist is up, I will be able to park a third vehicle on it, or where it stands, with the other two in the front half of the garage at the door.

Right now because i do not have the hoist up yet, if I roll my tool box off to the side I can park two deep, with my 65 is on the other side. The picture below makes it look crowded because I was just finishing building the cabinets and setting it up.

I have to put the doors on the 24' side because of the way it is situated on the lot. I found some used insulated doors so that will save on some of the cost. I plan to dig the footers and start laying block sometime in April. The block will be two courses above ground and 10' 2x4 walls to give me close to 12' ceiling height. I may install a lift at some point but probably not for a few years.

I'm doing all the work myself and I'm hoping to spend around 7k for materials. It will probably be more than that until it is all said and done. A materials estimate was around 7k not including the concrete and block which will probably be 2-3k.

i had a 25x30x12 shop for many years and turned some amazing projects out of it
it was not used for parking only projects; half wood shop, half fab shop with only one 10x10 door
if your a horder or a pack rat nothing will be big enough :D

I had one at my old house. Too small though...;) It had 9ft doors too.
I now have a tandem garage because it's all I could build on my lot.

You said around 7 k for materials. I spent 5500 just for the concrete.

I am planning on a 24 x 36 to fit in my lot too. Mine will be 12' eve height with only one door on the 24' end. The door will be 10x10 or 12x10. This is all I can get in my lot given how my access and house sits...I have a quote for a complete building minus lighting and electrical and any plumbing for $10,584. That is a metal skin, wood frame building with a 4" reinforced concrete floor with a stub out for the electrical.

My shop was all steel, and the frame is 4x4 square tubing. It started out at 12,995I added 2 windows, another 10ft wide door. I wanted a steep roof, (5-12 roof pitch) that was extra. The 8x8 porch I added was extra. The insulation was extra. I had to put brick on the outside as well. So by the time I got finished, it was about 27k. Its like buying a car, you start out with a base model, and then there is the one you drive home in with all the options

Go the extra 4 feet deep, you'll regret it if you dont. I bought my house with a 24x40 already erected and outside finished, just needs wiring and insulation. Like you, the door is on the short side. It's really nice since this is my first garage but it's filling up fast haha.

Orge, your right. I added 30K to the value of my home, and that will never change.

But what I meant by that was, everyone always talks about what a bargain they got on a builg, or I show them mine and they might say I paid too much. I added a lot of stuff to mine, and I did my homework before I pulled the plug. I had a estimate from Mueller and Morton Buildings, and it was 35-40k for what I wanted. So dont just look at Price per sq ft. The quality of materials and options is a huge factor.

Most people I hear get a 4 inch slab, I add another inch to that. It was $1500

So Splehigh, do your homework and Buy as big as you can afford. No matter what, once its built, its more than you had before you got started.
