Wanting to take my sport mirrors off.

I am thinking about taking the little sport mirrors off this newest short bed and putt the standard mirrors on. If I do so will the bigger mirror mounts cover up the sport mirror holes? I don't want to get into alot of work just to swap mirrors over if the holes will still be exposed. I don't like trying to look into the smaller mirrors to see behind me.

That's exactly what GM designed that larger mirror (80 up) to cover up the top small mirror holes with the wide base gasket. I put many new GM kits on trucks back when they were in production. The GM kit had everything right down to the anchor nuts and template and the kit in the day was almost the price of one mirror so my local dealer always had the accessory kit in stock.

Thanks. I just need to have the holes drilled then and have the certs put in then. I am taking the mirrors off of a set of doors I have.

Yeah the original nut serts used about a 1/2" hole and you pushed them in and they collapsed when the screw tightened up. They have a tool the body shops use to install simular with a stud gun. You can also use regular nuts if you take your door panels off to install and hold the wrench.

Quick question.. what are you referring to as "sport mirrors"? There were 4 different styles of mirrors that I can think of that were put on these trucks.

Tripod, West Coast, Elephant, and Sport.

The little square mirrors on this truck. They look good on it but worthless for me.

Not sure what I am doing with them yet. I still have to do a transmission first. Got a few other things to do before I take it to the body shop to have them put on.

There is also a little bracket that supports the larger 80+mirrors. It attaches from the inside of the mirror bracket to the inner door structure.

Yeah I need to see if my spare doors have them.

Here a Pic of one kind of base and the one I have that is the one on the right side of the Pic. Considerable smaller.

I guess I am use to my other dumbo mirrors. The small mirrors just are not for me.

I've always ordered the small mirrors on all my trucks (RPO D49). I don't like the appearance of the big "dumbo" mirrors sticking out.

I guess it is what you are used to, and what you are using them for.

Yes. It's just my opinion. I like how they look on these trucks but just not my cup of tea to look out of. Growing up I had the small sport mirrors on my cars but once I transitioned over to trucks then most had a bigger mirror. I have got used to having them I guess. JMO.

Did you put the certs in the door or just bolt this directly?

Re: Wanting to take my sport mirrors off.

My '85 Jimmy came through with what people started calling sport mirrors. I always called them car mirrors, because that's pretty much what they are. From a real truck stand point they are about worthless because they are so small...mirrors are an important element in safe load hauling. From a looks stand point they look best because they are so small. I never could see much out of them, but with the high back buckets and being lifted I can't see chit! I have to turn my head to look around and through the seats before ever moving over to the right. Backing a trailer in when dark, forget it. If I didn't know where everything in my driveway was I couldn't back in at all. I have a pair of black (Dumbo) mirrors to go on and they will cover the old holes. The member I bought them from said there were no brackets in the doors when I asked him to look. They all used them and they are needed. I got some at a local junk yard
