axle end play, axles fit tight!

Hi all,

I have a 1970 (early) corporate 12-bolt rear end, and upgraded with some Moser 3065GMT5 (5 lug) axles.

The pin that goes through the carrier and keeps the axles from moving inward (and holds two of the differential gears in) went in snugly.

Define snugly? I had to tap it in with a rubber mallet.

Now there is zero end play in the axles. The axle ends rub on the pin.

Should I disassemble and have a small amount machined off the ends of the axles, or will they loosen up?

Barry, when you removed the old axle you had to push it inboard enough to remove the c-clip. When you installed the new axle you have to push it inboard far enough to re install the c-clip. Once that clip is re installed did you pull the axle back outboard enough to seat the c-clip all the way?

As long as you got the "pin" in it should be fine..

Good question, and yes we did. The issue seems to be that the distance from the clip to the end of the axle is a tad longer on the new axles.

How much end play is there typically? 1/32nd of an inch?

Thanks,

Barry

Pin in.

The axles rub enough that its difficult to turn one axle by hand while the other tire is on the ground. This is only when I'm grabbing the 5 lugs with my bare hand. If I put a tire on the axle the extra leverage makes it easier to turn the axle.

Thats the spider (planetary) gears making it difficult, not the axles touching the pin. Thats normal. If it were mine I wouldn't be concerned.. I'm sure you didn't, but don't forget the locking bolt that goes through the pin.....
