1970 Jimmy
2 Attachment(s)
After many years of wanting a 1970 Jimmy, my kids finally said "Dad, it's now or never, just buy it". So I bought one out of Fla. Starting to tear it down a little and came across holes that were cut into the torsion boxes. As I hope the pictures show. Why would anyone do this?
Thanks |
Re: 1970 Jimmy
Looks like the PO wanted to gain access to the floor for some reason even though you can get at that area by removing the rear plate. Strange ???

Re: 1970 Jimmy
Only thing that comes to mind would be rust removal or having a way to get at seat bolts...either way it's odd as the end caps provide access.

smuggling????

Re: 1970 Jimmy
That thought did cross my mind.

Re: 1970 Jimmy
I have a 72 Gmc and my torson boxes were torched off and saddle tanks were installed my gmc had 3 fuel tanks on it. Someone did some serious long driving.

Re: 1970 Jimmy
ive herd of people drilling the bottom or rocker boxes with a hole saw so they wouldn't hold dirt / deposits .aside from what was cut out you have a lot more than most in our area.

Re: 1970 Jimmy
Probably did it to prevent rust, give a way to wash out

Re: 1970 Jimmy
Maybe he cut the hole to access the 4 bolts on the forward floor support where they bolt up to the inner rocker. I don't think you can access these bolts from the rear of the box. I had to cut a hole in mine to get to them, but I cut a small hole then welded the piece back in when I was done.

That is a strange modification though. Should be easy to patch if you plan on it though. |
Re: 1970 Jimmy
My 1970 GMC Jimmy had the same cut outs by po , only the holes were much smaller. Will this cause a safety issue?

Re: 1970 Jimmy
I cut holes in mine right near the front that are similar, just not so big. I needed access to the back to bolt in the floor plates for my roll cage front down bars.

Re: 1970 Jimmy
Bolt access, rust repair or side step mounts get my vote.
