Cost to rebuild tranny 97' Z71????

Hey...
What's a ballpark figure on the cost to pull, rebuild and replace my automatic transmission in my 1997' Z71?
My tranny went out after only 92,000 miles. This truck has been taken care of too. No serious 4' wheelin either. I've had the fluid flushed once.
Supposedly, I blew the planetary gearing. Driving home on friday, the truck's motor reved and it felt like the tranny slipped. Then the noise started. It sounded like a supercharger whine. I only drove the truck for 2 miles from the time I noticed there might be a problem. Later that night, when I tried to move it around, i had no reverse. This is pissing me off. I've been meticulous about taking care of this truck and then this.

What is a reasonable price to pay to have the work done? I want a warranty.

Easily $1500.00

kxmotox247 08-26-2003 05:22 PM

The price I've been quoted is $1448 with 6 month 6,000 mi warranty. That makes me feel a little better but I'm still sick about having the tranny go bad in the first place.
Thanks for the info!

mine was $2000 installed at a gm dealer with a 3 yr 50,000 mile warranty.1998 z 71

bigunde...
How many miles were on your truck when it went bad?

I wish the warranty offered was a little longer. It scares me because there was no indication that I even had any tranny problems.

IN MY 88 THE TRAN WENT OUT ,I HAD THE CHEV DEALER PUT IN A N EW 700R4 IN A CRATE FOR 1295 WITH A 3 YEAR 50,000 MILE WARRANTY THEN IT WENT OUT WITH 1 MONTH LEFT ON THE WARRANTY. SO IM ON #3 now.
Ihad my truck back in 4 hours.

Mine had 145k and did the EXACT same thing your did and had the exact same failure. It sucks but i pull a trailer alot and needed the warranty.

Truck trannies

I own a machine shop and have 4 chevy shop trucks. This year has been hell. I have replaced trannies on every single one. 1992 1 ton flatbed w/ 106K miles ($1670), 1993 3/4 ton pickup w/ 94K miles ($1670), 1993 1 ton flatbed w/ 67K miles ($1670), 2000 S-10 w/ 42K miles ($2600). GM ate some of the last one (cost me about $1800). Needless to say, my next truck will be a ford. The first three trucks I bought rebuilt trannies. The S-10 got one of GM's new trannies with 50K mile warranty (although it went back last week to get new tranny lines that were junk to the tune of $308).

:burnout: mine went out and i had 150,000 on it the after i brought it to a shop the charged 1,000 to rebuilt it with 6/6,000 warranty but it went out at 7,000 and a year later now i replaced it with a custom tranny for 450.00 with 1 year warranty and it will break your neck it shifts so hard.:burnout: :metal:

trans rebuild

yeah $ 1500 don't sound bad I paid $1000 to a buddy of mine , He says it usually $ 1600 or more depending on what parts you fried ! Just make sure you get a new torque converter and those kevlar bands , and it should hold up better , A cooler is also a good idea. good luck !

Smooth68 09-03-2003 01:58 PM

I just sucked it up and went $2400 at the local chevy dealer - a bit higher but comes with a 3 year 50,000 mile warrenty. Plus its a NEW tranny not a rebuilt one.

jays68yak 09-04-2003 06:29 PM

Mine went out at about 130. Cost me $200, the rest of the $1800 was covered by the extended warranty that I had gotten on the truck when I bought it.

I have been told from several people that GM trannys go out around 90000. So who knows.

Smooth68 09-04-2003 10:47 PM

Yep, mine was right around 92.XXX when it went south.

apstguy 09-04-2003 11:05 PM

'85 TH700R4 w/ 138,000 still going strong. Of course I only have about 160hp and 240 torque going through it.

That sucks! They told me it was the planetary gears that went out. You'll have to tell us what's wrong with yours when you find out.
I just recently saw someone driving a 97-98 Z71 the other day who had "Powered by GM's disposable tranmission" written in big letters across the back window of the truck. I wish I had talked to them but it sounds like it happened to them too.
I still think it's amazing that mine went out like that. Absolutely no warning whatsoever.

1998c1500 09-11-2003 11:04 AM

sounds like everyone here should add a trans cooler or 4

frost89434 09-11-2003 11:09 AM

wish i would have known tha prior.

1998c1500 09-11-2003 11:13 AM

i just started pulling a boat and added one, but it looks to me that it would be helpful for any vehicle, especially in hot weather climates.

jays68yak 09-11-2003 12:37 PM

I think I might add one. Sounds like a good idea.

1998c1500 09-11-2003 02:46 PM

cheap insurance for your tranny. I might add one to my wifes Acura also. Texas gets pretty hot and they say the life of your tranny falls drastically as the heat climbs above 175 degrees. Hell it's 100 degrees outside as it is now.
