Help!!!!
 

Gents,

I have a 70 I6 3 on the tree standard and in this cold weather put too much M.A.N. on the column shifter and sheared it. I've retrieved all parts but the guys at LMC and Brothers told me I cant get the part new. Brothers told me to check the forums, there are some of you out there that repair them. I'm stranded in the front yard looking for a shifter and looking for some help/advice. Also any advice to loosen up the gears in the cold weather? Thanks!

Post some quick specific pics of what you need....or what you broke...that will help a lot.

Also, by retrieved all parts I meant I got the part that sheared out of the steering column...

As far as loosening up the shifter tube, while the lever is out spray the crap out of it in the hole where the shifter lever goes in the column. Do it now and it can be soaking while you are looking for a new lever. Just before you install the lever spray it again. Once you get the new lever installed put it in neutral and pull the lever up towards you and then push it towards the dash. Do this a few times and see if it gets a little easier to move. Be sure and spray the lower column parts under the hood too.

Do this^. Make sure you use a lube that doesn't gum up in the cold...

Per getting the part you can search local junk yards.

Or look for one for sale on the for sale forum, that can take time however. If your a supporting member you can post a wanted to buy thread and somebody may have one for you.

I just went thru this...... So the fact is you can not get these parts new !!!!

I just replaced the entire column. I also have come to learn that the parts in my original column are valuable. Sold the column complete (thru a friend) to a guy who rebuilds steering columns. He collects parts until he has everything he needs to build one up.

Any local parts yards are bound to have some used ones on hand. I don't think it's a big sell item. That manual shift lever looks just like the auto lever to me.
I bought a new auto shift lever a couple of years back for my truck from a Chevy truck parts vendor from Oklahoma.

I may still have that standard shift column from my 69. If I can find it I can maybe compare the two levers.
Or maybe someone here happens to have both a standard shift lever and an automatic shift lever handy they could compare them quicker than I.

I did find my shift levers and they are the same. Manual and automatic. The knobs differ a bit but the levers are the same. I believe the levers from 70s to 80s vans are the same as well if not a tad shorter.
The lever on right is from my manual shift column and the left one is from my auto column.

For future referance things that move and are very stiff // it's easy to clean and lubricate them before you horse it around and snap it needing replacement

That is fantastic! I'm not sure why the parts differ from dealers (LMC and Brothers) but would you be willing to sell me one of your levers?

The attached pic is what LMC sent me. Do you recall the parts dealer in OK you bought new parts from? Thank you for the help. Haven't had luck with local parts yards here, my next option was a local machinist.

I should have known better than to pull on it like I did. Got some great info here on how to lube it up to prevent from happening again. Thanks.

I had one break and welded it back on. after careful grinding, it worked great

I seem to recall the dealer said there were 3 or 4 different levers for these trucks. That's been maybe 4 yrs ago. I am trying to remember what their name is. This lever is most likely a repop as it was new but not in a GM package. The fit and finish is just like OE. I also bought the new knob as well.
I wonder what the 73-87 levers look like.
