Anybody still using R-12 in their A/C?
1 Attachment(s)
Was cleaning out the car hole yesterday and came across these. My parents must have bought them back in the 80's.
Im not sure if its okay to sell them or if its against the law. I've heard you have to have a license.or something now. |
Re: Anybody still using R-12 in their A/C?
It's 100% illegal to import or manufacture R-12 in the US....you have to be "licensed" to "handle" R-12. If you don't need them you can probably throw'em on craigslist and get $25+ for each can

I still run R12 in my square. And yes I do have a license to handle the stuff. I wish you lived near me. I'd buy it from you.

Is it illegal to ship it?

Re: Anybody still using R-12 in their A/C?
I recently sold 5 full 12 oz cans on craigslist for an insane asking price. And the guy who bought them was very happy.
As I recall, a full 12 oz can weighs around 14 oz. That means your 14 oz cans should weigh at least 16 oz. I say that because I have seen a couple go nearly empty after sitting for several years. |
Re: Anybody still using R-12 in their A/C?
I have done a few retro fits to 134a on some brand X vehicles. It seems to work ok. I ought to let my dad know that the 12lb(?) keg of r12 he has is still worth something. LOL

I have opened fresh sealed cases and found an empty can or two inside. The stuff definitely does not like being caged. ;) |

I remember when you could get a can for $.99
Friggin' EPA... |

I also remember a time when shops just drained the systems to atmosphere before servicing them. |

By the time the EPA is done with it, R134 will probably be gone too.

Re: Anybody still using R-12 in their A/C?
Most shops now use one of the hit shots in vehicles since it is much cheaper then the real R12. My dad has a 50 pound cylinder of 12 at his compound, and I have done a R212 rerto fit.
Besides R212 drop in the best is R12. |
