Under Hood Insulation Replacement - Options

Hi... I've got a '78 C10 and the original under hood insulation is falling apart. Looking to replace. See some on LMC and Classic Car Parts but am curious as to what others have done.

Subscribed - I'm looking to replace mine as well. Not sure how much difference it makes, but for originality reasons I'd like to fix what is there and not have it hanging down looking like crap.

Doing a lot of looking on the web and YouTube. Looks like most are cut to fit. Seen them as cheap as $30 and up over $100. Would like one that is fit and comes with clips. Not having luck finding one that's priced reasonable.

I just replaced mine with the LMC version. It is not as thick as the OEM mat and is flimsy, in my opinion. It does not dampen sound as far as I can tell. I would look elsewhere. I think fiberglass is not the best material for this application. The rainwater from driving through puddles and possibly oil/AC compressor oil thrown up by the belts ruins fiberglass quickly. A denser material, maybe a urethane foam type mat would be better. Perhaps dynamat or similar floor mat.

Those all look the same as the LMC stuff. The material was broken through where it was folded up for shipment, which gives you an indication of how flimsy it is. 1" is "nominal" thickness, in my opinion - really only about 5/8" thick when installed, in my experience. The material is not very dense and is too fragile for my use- about the density of wall insulation or less.

I replaced mine when I did the resto . I was like others about the aftermarket stuff .I checked with the local dealership and ordered mine from there . It seems to have a pretty good face side on it . Not indestructible but durable . It comes trim to fit like all of them . I had an extra hood so I made a template out of cardboard for a pattern . Worked pretty good .Here's a couple pictures.

Also this comes on there truck and it is one big flat piece in a box .It is not folded so don't go pick it up in your car if you decide to get one . It is much larger than you need so you will have some left over . It does not come with anything like clips . You will have to pick them up . I believe it takes 24 of them . In my picture there is a place in the center for one that I was short . Have not got it put in yet .

Also , I believe it is about 5/8 thick .

I agree..... I purchased the same stuff from LMC. It's sitting against the wall in my shop. Not worth the time for the install.

I went with the AcoustiHood ABS Panel from Quiet Ride.

I had some old thick stuff under the hood that created more dust under the hood than it did anything else.

I like the look a LOT better & it seems to sound the same in the cab as before.

That's why I bought 4WD, to handle what Tucson considers "streets".

Wow... That looks very clean. Looks like they run about $169 vs about $60. May be worth it.

I also like the Quietride kit too. It's a shame they don't offer the kit for the cowl induction hoods.

I tried to find a good pic of it with the hood back on but this is the only one I have on my phone... I'll have to try to get a better one.

(and thanks for the compliments)

What did you guys do for under-hood prep? I took my old, falling-apart, insulation out today and there's a lot of dust and a little surface rust. Curious what you guys did.

I had good luck with USA 1 INDUSTRIES. I have a 77 SW and it came cut to fit, and coated on the side facing the motor, and it had the mounting holes already punched through. The pad was $39.00, but they want $1.95 for the mounting grommets, you can get them at Lowes, or a good hardware store for about half that. good luck with your project.

Go I love the acoustihood, I decided to go with the $40 option. I rolled the dice and ordered a new wood installation pad off of Amazon. It was the Metra Moulded H3 for $44 with free shipping. When it arrived, though it was folded up, it sprung up and ended up being quite rigid. I was happy about that. Had a thick outer skin.

I then took the hood off, washed it extensively, cleaned up some surface rust, sprayed some rust inhibitor, then attached the new insulation pad. I was able to find new clips from NAPA.

My year (1978) has two pieces of insulation. One for the right side and one for the left side. There's a spine that runs down the middle of the hood from back to front. Suppose I could've installed over the spine but that would've been a home in the insulation. Overall, turned out pretty good.
