1978 k10 welded spider gears
I have a 1978 k10 shortbed 4 in lift on 33s the guy welded the spider gears to lock it up, but I need it as a daily driver for a few days?
|
Re: 1978 k10 welded spider gears
Gonna chatter and hop around corners. Try to swing wide and take it very easy on the throttle. Welded spiders and pavement driving is very hard on components.

Re: 1978 k10 welded spider gears
Yep, gotta love the redneck-locker.
Ever ride an ATV on pavement?? Going to be kind of like that. Like crashz said, going to be hard on drive components, especially axles. |
Re: 1978 k10 welded spider gears
Thanks, so if I want to replace that do I just need a new carrier.
|
Re: 1978 k10 welded spider gears
Beat me to it red neck locker.
jack up pull wheels after you drained the diff by pulling cover remove drums c clips on inside spider gears pull axles unbolt carrier 2 caps 4 bolts remove carrier you can see if you can torch gears apart probably need carrier and spider gears 4 sure. |
Re: 1978 k10 welded spider gears

welded is the better option lol.....
|
Re: 1978 k10 welded spider gears
Haha so if welding itis redneck lockers, what is taping it?
|
Re: 1978 k10 welded spider gears
I would worry less about the "Lincoln locker" and more about corners on rainy days

I wouldn't worry about it for just a few days my brother drove his lincoln locked jeep for like 2 years daily just watch the sharp turns and be careful in the rain.

Re: 1978 k10 welded spider gears
And I am in no way endorsing this for highway use but will get you by if no other options

^^HOLY CRAP!^^
Looks like someone threw a shovel full of chicken chit inside that diff! Lol!! |
Re: 1978 k10 welded spider gears
I haven't had any issues do dar, I do plan on getting a new carrier this weekend. I haven't even open that rear differential up I hope it's not like that one.

Re: 1978 k10 welded spider gears
I wonder if that last one pictured could experience rapid carrier bearing wear. That has got to be incredibly out of balance!
I'm not saying a carrier is supposed to be perfectly balanced, heck I admit that I do not know if they are or are not. But that thing just by the looks in the pic has got to be way beyond the limit of any reasonable expectation of balance allowing for smooth operation. I Wonder how much that axle would flutter up and down if the truck was put on a lift, put into gear, and run up to speed..... |
Re: 1978 k10 welded spider gears
When the seller told my it was welded I was thinking " OK I can just put a new carrier in. "
As I removed the cover I wanted to throw up !! I'm a welder by trade. This thing has to be warped to hell. And it being a factory posi I was sick !!!!!! So now I cant remove the C clips to get the axles out. Looks like a drum to drum replacement. GOD HATES ME !!!!! |

I can't think of any reason why anyone would weld a posi, unless it's a whooped Auburn. Not that it matters at this point, but is it an Auburn or a Gov-Loc? I know you said factory posi, but I see alot of people refer to the Gov-Loc as posi...Even if it's a whooped Auburn and the PO dodnt have the $$$ to replace it, what's so wrong with having a worn posi till you do. It will just be like having an open diff. But no, now you have the carrier, axles and whatever else they butchered to address... :( I am also into old Honda ATC's. Have 6 of them, 250r's, 350x, Big Red, etc...I see alot of "repairs" that include welding parts together that render multiple parts junk due to their impending destruction upon removal. Axles/wheel hubs, sprockets/countershafts, shifters/shifter shafts, and on and on... Some people should not be allowed in the same room with a welder without an application process... |
Re: 1978 k10 welded spider gears
Amen Brother....
The truck never hit the road... It was to become a rock crawler. it was in too good of shape to let that happen. Still has the a.i.r. pump hooked up and running. With all the B.B.s and slag left inside I would say maybe 10 mile at best on the road. |

Again, not that it matters more than a poo-flavored lollipop at this point, but looking at that pic again, those 2 shafts make me think it was a Gov-Loc. Hopefully you can find a smidge of consolation that they didn't sodomize a $500 carrier at least.... :dohh: Good to hear you at least were able to rescue a good truck from doom though! That's worth something! :) |
Re: 1978 k10 welded spider gears
What carrier do I need, I have a 12 bolt differential
|

Beyond that, if you are running 3.42 and numerically lower gears, you need a series 3 carrier. If 3.73 or numerically higher, you need a series 4. OR: You can run 3.73-higher on a series 3 carrier if you get a gear set with a "thick" ring gear. So, what gear ratio will you be running? |
Re: 1978 k10 welded spider gears
it's set up at 3.73
