Help With 283 Specs
The 283 in my 67 stepper has about 400 miles on it since the rebuild. I know some of the specs from the PO. Can't find build sheets in all the papers and the machine shop closed when the owner retired. Trying to figure out some of the details without digging really deep into it.
The PO said to run 91 octane gas. Was told the heads are the "fuelie" 58 cc heads. I don't have any numbers off the heads but it would be easy to pull a valve cover for numbers. I did a vacuum test at idle and it was 16" lbs. Not sure if this would be expected with a RV cam? Also, would there be a way to check the overall compression ratio? Here are the details I know. 283 block #3849852 Bored 0.40 over RV cam (Not sure specs on cam) Thanks |

Re: Help With 283 Specs
Ok I got more numbers off the block.
Here is the number on the pad infont of the passagner head. F0124D Anyone have a old GM book they can look up the number for me? |
Re: Help With 283 Specs
You need a casting number from the head(s) to get much info. The F0124D does not help. Perhaps get the casting number off the rear of the block below the distributor.

Re: Help With 283 Specs
3849852: 57-66 283 with 2 bolt mains - very common, recurring block casting
F0124D: F0124 = Flint Plant, Jan 24 build "D" provides the best clue - I show that as either a: 1958 185 hp, 2bbl 283with powerglide, available on cars and trucks (note your mechanic said you had 58 fuelie heads...) or 1960 170 hp, 2bbl 283 with powerglide, available on cars and trucks Hope that helps. |

Cool thank you sir. This was the info I was looking for. Could you look up my heads? Here are the numbers. Passenger side. #8884520 Middle of head shows. GM 37 Back of the head shows. F307 Thanks |
Re: Help With 283 Specs
Can't find 8884520, but recommend re-check and see if leading digit is a "3"
3884520 = 1960-1967 283, 60cc chambers - 1.72 intake/1.50 exhaust F307 is build date = May 30 (Edit: added '57) 57 -OR- 67 (perhaps 57 and still with their originally assigned duty on that '58 283...) That's all I can find. |
