Baffeling Bezel
1 Attachment(s)
I am fixin to put my truck up on ebay, and in preperation for the tire kickers, I had a Question about my instrament bezel. I know somebody will ask me, and I don't want to reveal my stupidity.
Forgive my spelling, I can't spel or tpye. The bezel looks original with faded woodgrain and worn off chrome, but it is gold colored now with tiny spots of the silver remaining. I have seen hundreds of old truck bezels but this is a first for me. The ones I have seen have all been black under the chrome. I was wondering if maybe it has been replated liked they did 10-15 years ago before the repo's or what. Any ideas or has anyone ever seen this before. Isn't ebay fun? I posted my truck on the parts board a coulpe days ago, but will post 1 more here as a last ditch effort to keep away from ebay. @4,400 and she'll be busting bugs. Thanks for you help, Jason |

You're parting THAT?
That looks like it's in great shape! <shakes his head in wonder> Brian |
No!!!!!
The whole truck, But someone from ebay will want to know why the bezel is GOLD, and I have no clue. Why, you see something you need...lol |
Might want to quiz GMC Paul.
I think I remember a thread about some bezels cast in "FAWN" (tan) I know it's more common to GMC's. (I think!) I'm like you, all I have ever seen have been black underneath the chrome. Mike:bowtie: |
Nice looking truck.

CHROMEPARTS
Aren't chrome parts copper plated under chrome layers? I know bezels are plastic but maybe this is base layer chrome finish was applied too and most of chrome is gone.
|
I believe you're correct Hardrock. On the back of my original 68 bezel, there are 2 part numbers, one for black, one for fawn. I'm thinking that may be the case here.

Thanks for all the ideas. At least now I can tell them what I think or what I have heard without making something up. I like the copper Idea, if its not correct, At least it sounds like a logical explanation. Thanks again ,Jason

what it is the chrome is wore off and they use the copper to give a base for the nickle to stick to, if you ever look at something that has been plated and you see yellowing it is because they didn't get enough nickle on it or couldn't get it to flow into that area.
|
That's interesting. I knew that on steel like on bumpers, during electroplating they used copper-nickle-chromeium or nickle-copper-chromeium one of the two. So they use the same process on plastic as well? Thats real chromeium on the bezel????
|
I dont think they used chrome I think it might have been just nickle, because we had the plastic covers that say corvette on an LT1 plated and on the back of them you can see some copper and they ended up being pretty heavy, and I know they actualy do have chromium on them
