Pulling the cab off the 71, is it difficult?
I already know I'm pulling off the cowls, fenders, bed, bumpers, grill, windows, bench and gas tank. The truck needs new cab mounts and a steering box, so it seems no better time to replace them than with these items off the truck.
I'm going to refinish all exposed areas, so I was thinking, considering everything else to be done anyway, how difficult is it to pull the cab off so I can refinish underneath? Also, with those items off, less the gas tank, cab and steering box of course, shouldn't I be able to drive that thing onto a trailer and such? This is all new to me, and I won't be alone taking most of this stuff off. I'm in the planning phase and want to have my ducks in order. Thank you for any tips/advise. |
Re: Pulling the cab off the 71, is it difficult?
Pulling cabs is pretty easy if you have everything disconnected at the firewall and have a 2 post lift, or forklift/tractor. If not, search on here for the engine hoist adapters guys have made. Theres also plans for nice carts here to work on the bare cab.

It can be done with 4 guys pretty easy. Removing the doors drops a lot of weight. If at all possible, when you think you're ready, lift it up slowly and have someone looking underneath, always seems to be one thing that you forgot lol

Yes, '71s are hardest of all the years  Sorry, just kidding. They are all the same. Try a Suburban or a Panel truck. I've done that alone. This is my motto: "If there's a wheel there's a way". Jack it up, support the body, lower frame, and roll it out

Taking anything apart is easy.
Chances are the truck also needs cab corners, inner and outer rockers and so on. They all do. I'd start w/ new mounts and work my way out. |

If you have access to an engine lift and leveler it's a one person job. I bolted chains to the lower hinge and then the seat belt bolt.

IF YOU HAVE ACCESS TO 2x4'S IT IS EASILY ACCOMPLISHED BY YOURSELF AS A ONE MAN DID ITMYSELF JOB IF YOU WANT TO TAKE A WEEKEND TURN IT INTO A 4MAN COMMITTEE
