Do you have a 4WD with a 3 SPD on the colum transmission?

pimpston is looking for a picture of the 4WD lever bracket on the side of a 3 SPD transmission.
So far I haven't found a picture, but did look into the parts book. The parts book illustration is from 1960. That illustration has the lever on the passenger side of the transmission. GM does that kind of thing because they just want to show you the general idea of the parts so you can get a group number. The transfer case parts are in group 4.000 which is transmissions. More specifically the transfer case parts are in 4.500 In 1961 they changed the lever location to the drivers side. The one book I'm looking at goes to 64. Most of the parts indicate that they are the same from 61-64 and that the apply to ALL. All is a term used to indicate that whatever transmission you have it's ALL the same part. There are a few exceptions for W/3SPD applications.

Some part numbers are GMC in the Chevrolet parts book. GMC Years are indicated by letters, complicated!

In the 65-75 parts book:
63-66 share some of the brackets between a 4 SPD & 3 SPD.

Sorry, should have specified 61-66.

The picture above is for 67 on up is it not?

Re: Do you have a 4WD with a 3 SPD on the colum transmission?

Not sure aerotruk63.....just some pics I came across and had archived as I hadn't seen many 4wd's w/3 speeds. Although with the ebrake style set up on the pics in post 2-3 would definitely be 66 or later

Im not very familiar with the 4wds in general. I'll look through my literature tonight and see if I can find any factory documentation on it.

looks like a 67 as it looks like it married to the t/f case.

I have a pic of the shifter, but its a complete cab....here goes. This is a members 65....I don't remember who though. But was a factory column shift 3 speed 4 wd. Not the best pic, but best for what I have.

I'll check my literature tonight and see if it lends any help.

Re: Do you have a 4WD with a 3 SPD on the colum transmission?

it seems to have the looks of a t221 but doesn't have the casting for the top mounting which our year trucks require. it is a married unit and is bottom mounted. perhaps as mentioned a later model, 68 or 9.
wondered what they used for a pto mounting when they used a 3 speed with a t221 as the t221 won't take a pto and a 3 speed doesn't seem to have the accommodation either?

Re: Do you have a 4WD with a 3 SPD on the colum transmission?

That's just as interesting as a 4WD 3 SPD ron!
Depending on the application you could run something off the drive pulleys, but I don't think there could be any adapter for the crank snout like on the bigger trucks.

Looked through all my Chevrolet/ GMC Canadian and American parts books and shop manuals, no picture.
The part number that seems to come up the most is 3823426 for the 3SPD Bracket and 3823427 for the 4SPD 61-66.

Googled the part numbers and just got GMPartsWiki. no hits on obsolete parts or Ebay.

What parts of the lever system do you have Le Pimp?

i only have the bracket that fits a 4 speed and nothing else, its a triangle pieces with the pivot rod for the lever, like the 4 speed in pic 2 and 3 of your first post...

Re: Do you have a 4WD with a 3 SPD on the colum transmission?

pimp did your GM VIN revue state that it was a 3SPD? I forget what I saw.
Is there a High Hump Transmission cover in the burb now with a clean cut hole for a 4 SPD?
Are you basing the 3 SPD being original because of the 3SPD steering column?
Are the rods that connect to the 3SPD column dangling from the column or are they missing?
The PO could have installed the 3SPD column to sell off the sought after 4SPD column.

again, its odd. cuz it only states "manual", but has a high hump, yet the original column is a 3speed. when i took the column off its got original paint, so im thinking the column was truly a 3 speed. also the drive shaft is after market from the tail shaft to the TC. the other 2 are original... the hole in the hump was all kinds of jacked, the TC hole wasnt original so i think it was switched...

Re: Do you have a 4WD with a 3 SPD on the colum transmission?

The high Hump with a 3 SPD wouldn't make sense except for the clearance required for the transfer case shifter.

So the 3SPD is still in the Burb?
Do you still have the PO's Telephone number, I could call and translate any info I could get.

Re: Do you have a 4WD with a 3 SPD on the colum transmission?

Does it have any staining on the casing like something was once bolted to it? I'm thinking that there was a 2 piece bracket setup for a 3SPD using the 4SPD bracket as well.

im not sure cuz the 4speed bracket bolts to the side and top of the trans, no such mounting points on the 3speed, the 2 piece design would work if its like an L shape to mount to the bottom of the trans at the tailshaft part. i was thinking of modifying the 4speed bracket by keeping only the swivel dowel part and the flat stock that its welded to, cut it flush with the tail section and have a new flat stock section added the will bolt to the tailshaft and be welded to the remaining swivel/flat stock piece. i have the hump out so i can make height adjustment as if im in the drivers seat, too bad its now gutted. i will put the seat back in to make corrections...
