235 to 305 swap. Questions?
 

I'm thinking of replacing my 235 with an 86 or older 305. Can I use my 235 front motor mounts? Is there a good aftermarket motor mount that works. I've heard some people are having issues with aftermarket. I have an LMC trans mount kit that worked good.

A lot of works best depends on what trans you plan to use.

If you plan to use a V8 bellhousing with the manual trans you have stock type mounts work ok just as they have 60 years. If you are going to an automatic you need to run side mounts to prevent flexing at the bellhousing and potentially breaking a bellhousing or having front pump seal problems.

When the TF boys wake up from their Sunday naps (they are real old) they can give you the fine points on the setup for using stock style front mounts on a TF truck.

Also you can run the front mounts with an auto (and transfer case like mine). You need to restrain the engine from rotating. First time I just used a chain around the frame, this time got a little more polished.

Thanks for all the info. I'm trying to get all my parts together before taking it apart. Looks like I'll be getting rid of my t-5 for a 700r4. Seems like I spend all my time shifting with the 235 and 4:11 gears.

I can relate on that one. As much as I like rowing my own gears my left knee gets tired of working or holding the clutch in real quick these days and having a 1 ton with a 4 sped and the GSI with the 5 speed gets to be a chore with a sore knee. The 292 may get an automatic behind it with some serious freeway gears yet.

if going with the 700r4 you can not use any old motor mounts
the 700r4 uses a rear mount and side motor mounts

imo... easiest way to position the motor is to bolt it to the current bellhousing and weld in side mounts
then remove the bellhousing and bolt up the 700r4 and weld in the trans mount
you'll need a shortened drive shaft and a modified trans cover
