Brush-on chassis paint - Happy with results?
 

I'm thinking I might brush on two coats of Bill Hirsch Black Chassis Undercarriage. I feel I can get the nooks and crannies better, and I'm pretty good with a brush. So I'm wondering, have you brushed on? Did you brush on primer as well? Were you happy with the results?

Still pondering how far I need to go on the frame, scuff Vs down to metal. I suppose I could do some research and have it blasted.......................................Not sure I want to remove the leaf springs. I figure I can get them "looking" like new anyway, and if ever they need replacing, all is equal anyway. Cutting a corner so to speak. New exhaust system though. Can't wait to see the price on that. I hear the guy is outstanding. Today I asked him what his hours were......"9am-10pm".

Found a place that does soda blasting. Maybe I can work something out while the exhaust is off. At this point I'm just working under the "missing" bed. The rest comes later. The body guy and I are working our way forward, not all at once.

I se Masterseries because I am really sold on it and I know they actually make their product. The owner is a chemist who used to work for POR-15 and quit to start his own company when the cheapened down the product. I recommend brushing over spraying. It self levels, as far as looks goes. You will get a better coat of finish and not miss a spot. If you hit it at all, it's a good coat. With spray, and all the blow-by and various hidden angles, you tend to miss spots or barely cover others. You find out when you see the rust later on.

I used POR-15 on my frame and engine and am happy with the results, except on the headders. I used their high temp and it is flaking off.

I've used brush on paint por 15 rustoleum bill hirsh and ace hardware enamel have been pretty happy with the resuls on all the progects that i've done like that and had goord long lasting results on my daily drivers

Thanks again K. I'll look into Masterseries. Incidentally, I called the soda blaster today. His attitude sucks so he won't be getting my business. I may end up stripping this down the hard way.

weve all done the hard way. thats what makes us dedicated. :) i brushed my por-15 and it looks and survives well

So do you paint over the nuts and bolts with this stuff? Seems it might come back to haunt you if you ever had to remove anything.

I also use Master series, and I like the silver. Anytime you can brush it on you will get better adhesion, you can spray on a 2nd coat of the same or top coat with just about anything including base coat. ....matter of time how far you want to get into your project, painting over nuts and bolts is not ideal but stripping down to a bare frame takes a while.....http://www.masterseriescoatings.com

Brushed on POR 15, very happy with results. Been using it well over 20 years and will keep doing so. I'm sure there are other products that are the same thing, but I'm not changing when I don't see the need.

Master series silver for me too. But I sprayed what I can and brushed where I couldn't spray. But wear gloves, even lacquer thinner won't get it off your hands.

There really aren't many bolts where I'm at (bed frame). The exhaust system will be new anyway, as will the shocks. That leaves the leaf springs. Light brush strokes around the bolts should do it.

Unless I can make some arrangements, I'll be stripping down the frame the hard way. Not sure on scuff Vs down to metal yet. But I did find out today I have an allotment of vacation time due me. That with the regular, it's three weeks on one week off for the balance of the year.

I'll need it too. Once the bed is done the painter will be ready for the cab. My first restoration, so I'm fairly green. This website has helped A LOT.

I used this stuff on the recommendation of a friend. It's better than regular paint, but nowhere as good as the POR-15 type stuff. For the amount of work I did, I should have ponied-up for the better product.

I'm reading up on Master series "silver". Did you guys use their top coat or other?

Took a wire brush on drill to a few areas, the existing is real solid. But then I watched someone use aircraft paint remover on powder coat...........That's the ticket. Going down to metal, the "hard" way.

brushed on POR-15 and topcoated with John Deere Blitz Black..it came out good...no complaints from my end yet.
