A couple of affordable truck trackers I've found

Getting pretty affordable. The Spot Trace is 10 bucks a month, battery powered, but only reports position every 5 minutes.

The linxup is 23 bucks a month, but adds gps for more accuracy and reports real time. They have a wired version so you'd never have to replace batteries.

There's also the "hide an old phone" option, but you'd still have to pay for a service plan, and these options above seem simpler.

I guess it depends on how paranoid you are, or want to be.

For $10 you can know your trucks' whereabouts every 5 minutes.

If you need more reassurance than that, it'll cost you more than double.


Not trying to be a wise***, that's just how it occurs to me.

I use the unflappable Truck Club! It's worked every time so far!:lol:

But I don't have tens of thousands into my rig either.

I say go with the $10/mo. It's a good balance, but only you know how paranoid you are :lol:

One thing that was pointed out to me last week (you may have already figured this out). The SPOT Trace is a satellite 'driven' deal, as opposed to cellular on most all of the other options. Downside is your vehicle is already potentially 2 1/2 minutes away before you are notified. Upside is if it goes out of cell range it will keep 'talking' to you. Oh, and it costs twice as much per month to take it up to 2 1/2 minute updates?

This is one of the reasons I wouldn't settle for anything less than stated value insurance,if someone wants it bad enough, their gonna take it, even if they have to push,pull or trailer it away.
I'll probably be just as paranoid as the next guy, constantly looking over my shoulder to keep an eye on it.....good subject though!

Spot Traces installation instructions- "Mount the unit with the logo facing upward toward the sky. The unit may be mounted under fiberglass glass or plastic, but mounting under metal should be avoided."

Linxup isn't an anti theft device. It's purpose is for owners to keep tabs on their drivers. By the way, I cant find the obd port anywhere on my 72!:lol:

All kidding aside, I suppose if you had an engine swap or newer vehicle with an old port, you could remove the two screws that be the port in place and put it up under the dash. I would also suppose you could figure out which pin it gets power from and build an adapter.

Yeah, that was what I was referring to. And that spot trace location note... ugg.

Can't think of any place on our trucks it would work.

I wouldn't trust cheap solutions if I were you. From personal experience, the cheaper trackers are not reliable.

I would choose a gps vehicle tracking "solution" or "system" rather than a cheap device because a software solution is more reliable and robust than a device that can break at any point.
